Dear Friend:

The LA Board of Supervisor’s election between Mark Ridley-Thomas and Bernard Parks is one of the most important local races in recent years. There has not been a contested race for a Supervisor seat since 1992. The Board of Supervisors governs an area whose population is larger than many states — and their decisions are CRITICAL to: Health care for the poor, environmental policy, public transit, mental health care, smart economic development. Mark Ridley-Thomas is a progressive bridge-builder between communities and an agent for change.
In contrast. Bernard Parks, is a conservative being bankrolled by developers and big businesses that neglect the 2nd District. Councilman Parks is the former LAPD Chief of Police whose tenure was not renewed because he failed to address systemic problems within the LAPD.  The election of Mark would be a truly forward step for Los Angeles — and the election of Parks would be a backwards step.   PLEASE JOIN US IN THE EFFORT TO ELECT MARK RIDLEY THOMAS! Jan Goodman & Jerry Manpearl

Congresswoman Maxine Waters has served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991, representing the 35th District of California. She is considered by many to be one of the most powerful women in American politics today. She has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoken advocate for women, children, people of color, and poor people. On Iraq, Congresswoman Waters, as a member of the Out of Iraq Caucus, has challenged the President on his claim that there is a credible government in Iraq; "we have raised questions about the promised Iraqi oil revenue paying for the rebuilding of Iraq; we have called for investigations of contractors who are allegedly ripping off the American taxpayers and we have crafted legislation to address these problems and more. Most importantly, we have introduced legislation that would require that war funding only be spent to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq. Five years after "Mission Accomplished", the President is requesting more than $100 billion to continue this war in Iraq through 2008. I call on my colleagues in Congress to resist the President’s request. It is time to end the war in Iraq." On a whole range of issues-economic development and police brutality, the "war on drugs" and veterans concerns, Haiti, poverty, equal justice under the law, women’s rights, and children’s well being- Congresswoman Waters is found on the cutting edge and enjoys a broad cross section of support from diverse communities across the nation. We have never called her with a request that she has not responded to whole-heartedly.

Cole Miller is the founder of "No More Victims", a non-profit, non-sectarian, humanist organization founded in 2002, whose mission is to restore health and well being to victims of war and to advocate and educate for peace. Cole’s organization brings injured Iraqi children to the US for medical care; these are children that have been hurt as a direct result of US military assault. Cole says he founded the organization to put a "human face to what is called collateral damage." "No More Victims" rejects war as a means of resolving international disputes and believes one of the most effective means of combating militarism is to focus on direct relief to its victims. They’ve created a community-based model that empowers communities to provide direct assistance to victims of aggression as well as advocacy programs that empower high school and university students to help war-injured Iraqi children as well as providing medical supplies to under-funded hospitals and clinics inside Iraq. They find medical sponsorships for war-injured Iraqi children and work to forge ties between the children, their families and communities in the United States. "No More Victims" has been bringing Iraqi children to the United States for treatment since 2002. Cole Miller is a tireless advocate for these children.

Office of the Americasis a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of justice and peace through broad based educational programs.
