We’ll also air reactions from his close friends and allies in a variety of movements locally and nationally, and open up the phone lines for listeners to call in and express themselves.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Activists throughout Southern California are stunned and grieved by the sudden death of Don White, well known Southern California activist and KPFK Local Station Board member.  Don White contributed more than most to the movements for peace and justice, including his work with CISPES which is the Committee in Support of the People of El Salvador, Office of the Americas, numerous peace, anti-war, anti-intervention, pro-immigrants rights groups and coalitions, the Ad Hoc Working Group on Haiti, mass protests and more.  He is being mourned and will be missed by thousands throughout Southern California, and thousands more in El Salvador.
When Don died, he was in the midst of organizing for the upcoming LA Social Forum, we will hear from one of the Forum organizers to learn more about the workshops and other activities planned for first Los Angeles Social Forum.
From Jim Lafferty:
June 22, 2008
Dear Staff, Programmers and Members of the LSB:
     It is with a truly heavy heart that I must tell you of the death of my friend, and the friend of all the world, Don White. Don passed away suddenly; we are not exactly sure when. Indeed, as of this writing we do not have any more details.
    It will not be possible to fully describe here the degree of loss, both personal and political, that Don’s death represents. To describe his contribution to KPFK and Pacifica alone, would fill a volume.
     Don was simply a one-man progressive movement for peace and for social, economic and political justice. To say that he will be missed, is trite beyond words.
    When we know more and have had a chance to digest this tragic news a bit, we will be back to you with more, including what I am sure will be an announcement of a memorial service for Don.
     Until then, let me simply end with a paraphrase of Don’s sign-off on his answering machine…
"justice for all and peace in Iraq and El Salvador, and peace every where in the world…"
With deep regrets,
Jim Lafferty,
interim General Manager
Dear Friends,
It is with great sadness that I share the news of peace activist Don White’s passing — apparently from a massive heart attack.  Whenever I saw Don, he was realistic — yet optimistic and upbeat, always with a twinkle in his eye.  I had the pleasure of working with Don on the Jan. 27th anti-war coalition and on the local campaign trail for Kucinich for President.   Don was often the guy who moderated or made the pitch for money, most likely because he was good at raising money, talented at putting people at ease, making them laugh, but also making them want to give and be a part of something much larger than themselves.  Don, ever humorous Don, was young at heart and such a force in the peace and justice movement, that it’s difficult to imagine him gone …
Peace be with Don,
Marcy Winograd
Dear Friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I write that Don White has left us.  This is one of the saddest days ever — for all who knew Don and all that benefited from his commitment to people and the planet.  He was a mentor, an example of who we can be for others, a shining example of what it means to be the best human that you can be.  He was a dear friend to me and a partner in many causes.  Cause of death has not been determined yet.
I and so many others are stunned and deeply saddened. Still in shock. I saw don pretty much every week doing activist work he and the women’s group with whom I am active do together, including at weekly vigils on haiti. Indeed we were to have a mtg in a few days, to plan a visit to the bolivian consulate that don had set up for us, and to meet up again at the la social forum next weekend.
I have known and worked with don in one capacity or another since the 1980’s. It is so very hard to grasp and absorb, yet in a weird way I understand how quickly and easily things like this can happen. Some of you may recall my very serious illness last year, you may not have known that I was just hours away from death, but I came back, and don was so very concerned and kind, tracking me down and writing about his deep concern.
His voice of reason and balance will be missed dearly. I know of few people who were so dedicated to social change than don, it was his whole life, he worked tirelessly and always with great humor, love and compassion. He will be mourned by thousands in socal, and by many more in el salvador. Don white presente! Will write more as will others, also he will be remembered on my show and others on kpfk. What a loss!!!!
In case you haven’t heard from other sources, our dear friend Don White has passed away.  Below are some details and comments.  Don was on the KPFK Local Station Board for over 4 years and also spent 2 years on the Pacifica National Board.  He was also a long time peace and justice activist.  His kindness, geniality and fairness were appreciated by all.  He was a beloved member of our community.  He never failed to see the good in each of us.
In peace,
A dear wonderful man!!
My parents, who passed a few years ago, often spoke of Don as one of the purest, most decent, human beings they knew. Fortunately, I got to know him that way as well.
We will miss him.
Peace All Ways,
I just learn that the wonderful activist Don White was found dead in his apartment
All I know is that his family and friends had been trying to reach him for the past few days and someone when by his apartment, in the
Los Felix area, and found him dead.
No cause of death is known yet.
Couldn’t be sadder news to the Los Angeles Progressive Community and especially to the El Salvadorian community in which in dedicated much of his last 25 years or so.
Dear Peace Supporter:
As I sat in prison across the ocean in Germany, my days were filled with anguish as I faced 7 years in prison after being charged with desertion and missing movement. I was separated from my loving family. All because I stood up for conscience. The morning I appeared on Democracy Now! I was terrified. It was the first time I would go public with my story and I had no idea how I would be received. But what happened was awe-inspiring! People across the nation and across the world—people like you—rallied to encourage and support me and my family through letters, cards, and contributions. Although my days behind bars were filled with uncertainty, support like yours allowed me to afford the best possible counsel, which meant that instead of spending 7 years in prison, I spent only 8 months. That support
made it possible for us to fight my case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. YOUR SUPPORT made it possible for me to be free today. How can I say THANK YOU enough for that?
Now I honor your support by helping others. I saw the effects of war firsthand and so I’ve come home and dedicated my future to no more wounded soldiers. Since being released, my wife, Helga, and I have devoted ourselves to helping those in similar situations. Almost every day we get calls from desperate soldiers and their families. Many have realized that they, too, are Conscientious Objectors and cannot kill. They contact us, seeking information and support. We support soldiers and their families who are facing deployment and are confused about their rights. We make ourselves available to them 24/7 so that they know they are not alone.
We also reach out to young people thru The Arlington West Film Speakers Project who are thinking about enlisting and those targeted by military recruiters. This year we are determined to see at least 10,000 teenagers and young adults and provide them with the information that will help them make informed decisions. (We have seen nearly 5,000 this year already—YOU can help us reach our goal of 10,000!) Our mission is to provide young people with an alternative and realistic point of view about military enlistment, and to show them the power of living with conscience. Our message helps young people understand that they don’t have to join the military to learn valuable skills, find adventure, pay for college, or serve others. We want to make a difference by helping them see a different side to these issues. We want them to have a balanced picture so that they can make educated decisions about their futures. We encourage them to think critically, search for more information, and then make an informed decision about military service. Our message balances the deliberate misinformation given to these young people by recruiters and media as fact. As former military members, we know that low-income students and young people of color are being sidetracked away from higher education and into the military. We expose deceptive military advertising and give young people the information they need to pursue their goals for job training, higher education, and service to others—without killing.
We speak as a military family with personal experience of the realities of military life and war. To learn more about us please check out the film "Man of Conscience." We speak about the many costs of war, and we speak about Conscientious Objection and peaceful alternatives for creating a peaceful world geared toward social justice, positive change, and a green environment. We work with educators and community members to arrange assemblies, classroom talks, and community presentations. We make ourselves available to students for one-on one-counseling, as well as provide follow up information.
We are so grateful for the support you’ve given us. Now we need your help to help others. YOUR CONTRIBUTION TODAY will make it possible for us to continue this important work with young people! Your donation will make it possible for us to reach 10,000 or more young people this year. Your gift will help SAVE LIVES.
EVERY GIFT makes a difference. YOUR GIFT of $100 will help us reach 20 new young people with our program. YOUR GIFT of $30 will enable us to talk to a soldier or military family in Europe or across the country and provide much-needed information and support. YOUR GIFT of $20 will help defray printing and mailing costs so that we can get information out to even more young people. YOUR GIFT of $500 will make it possible for us to present our program in even more communities.
YOUR GIFT is a crucial part of our efforts to inform young people about the reality of the military and about the reality of war.
Please send YOUR GIFT today—$30, $50, $100 or more, or whatever you can afford. Every single dollar counts and will make it possible for us to continue to help young people make informed decisions about military service.
Act now! Send your gift through www.aguayodefense.org click on the donate tab or you can contribute through PayPal to aguayodefense@aol.com or you can mail your check –
YOU’LL BE SAVING LIVES!
IF you are still undecided read this and let it persuade you! . . .
For the last year, Helga and Agustín Aguayo have been joining us with the ARLINGTON WEST FILM & SPEAKERS PROJECT, visiting thousands of inner-city students, those most targeted by military recruiters.  The Aguayos share their heartfelt story to attentive audiences and have guided thousands of young people into a direction of peace and higher education. Their story is not only unique and riveting, but it inspires teenagers in profound ways. If any peace group deserves your financial support, it is The Aguayos for the work they do with young people.
Please donate today!
Background
The World Social Forum and its local and regional offspring are open meeting spaces where progressive social movements, networks, nonprofits and other civil society organizations get together to pursue their thinking, debate ideas, formulate strategies and proposals, share experiences, and network for effective action.
The forums bring together people who want to build a more peaceful, sustainable, and participatory world. They are characterized by plurality and diversity, and they are nongovernmental and nonpartisan.
A social forum is what you make it—a meeting place, a debating forum, an exchange of ideas and solutions, a theater stage, a celebration, a festival, a bazaar. It can be any or all of these.
About 20,000 people attended the first World Social Forum in January 2001 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The event, which has been held each year since then, drew 150,000 in 2005.
The World Social Forum was created to counter the influence and purposes of the World Economic Forum, an annual meeting of top business and government leaders to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
