Two sessions with breakout tables for discussion. Each breakout session will come up with priorities
for the new Coalition in three areas: program, organization, and message.
Organizing Locally - here in the LA area, what can we do better together than separately? that will actually succeed?
The largely unknown fact that the U.S. and Russia have their nuclear missiles on hair-trigger alert is astonishingproof that the nations are still very much under the grip of the old us-vs-them thinking that has plagued humanity.
The cure, as Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein said in their famous 1955 Manifesto, is to remember our humanity.
It appears we need a global grass roots movement if we are to achieve nuclear disarmament.
Los Angeles has a number of organizations that are actively promoting nuclear disarmament. Would it not make sense for these organizations to form a coalition for the purpose of going global? And if we are at it, why not look
at ways to cooperate for local and national ends as well? Los Angeles is a world class city that is looked to as an
example. We have tremendous resources here. A smartly designed program to build a local coalition, connect with
the other great world cities, and then link the cities in a coordinated world league would bring in new people and
money. This is our way out of the box. At least it could be. It is worth discussing, and that is what this conference
is about.
The intent is for this to be a working conference. The key result will be for existing organizations to get to know each other better and take concrete steps towards making the coalition a reality.
