THE FRIENDSHIP VILLAGE is an award-winning 50-minute documentary by Canadian filmmaker Michelle Mason about an international group of veterans who are building a village in Viet Nam for children with Agent Orange-related disabilities. Built on a former rice paddy near Hanoi, the Friendship Village stands not only as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, but as a testament to the potential for all people to come to terms with the past, heal the wounds of war, and create a better world.

Following the story of the village’s founder, American veteran George Mizo, THE FRIENDSHIP VILLAGE takes us through his experiences of war’s horror to the personal transformation that led to the birth of his remarkable village. Working alongside the Vietnamese general responsible for killing his entire platoon in 1968, George and other veterans from the USA, Vietnam, France, Germany, Japan, Great Britain and Australia are attempting to mitigate the ongoing effects of the toxic herbicide sprayed during the war. Their efforts are a powerful example of how average people can still make a profound difference in our increasingly globalized world. As such, the Vietnam Friendship Village has the potential to change not only the lives of the children who live in it and the men who build it, but all who come to understand its mission.

WINNER:

  • Grand Jury Prize, Best Documentary, Best Director of a Documentary at the 2003 New York International Independent Film & Video Festival
  • Silver Hugo for Best Social/Political Documentary at the 2003 Chicago International Television Awards
  • Columbine Award for Best Documentary at the 2003 Moondance International Film Festival, Boulder, Colorado

I’ve just seen THE FRIENDSHIP VILLAGE. It is an extraordinarily moving and powerful film. It is by turns heartrending and inspiring. Centering it on the experiences and thought of Vietnam veteran George Mizo was a brilliant idea. I believe the film is a proper tribute to the life of this remarkable human being. I hope this film will be seen by large numbers of young people, to remind them of what the U.N. charter calls"the scourge of war."

Challenging the Unchallengeable

The Reflecting Pool

Written and Directed by Jarek Kupsc
Produced by Jodie Baltazar and Joseph Culp
Starring Joseph Culp, Jarek Kupsc, Lisa Black, and Alex Hyde White

The Reflecting Pool may just be the All The President’s Men of our time. This gripping, chilling, fact-based thriller stars writer/director Jarek Kupsc (Slumberland) as Alex Prokop, a successful, hard-hitting Russian-American journalist. As a last gasp before corporate takeover, his editor (Lisa Black) hands Prokop a bombshell assignment — investigate the official version of 9-11. Prokop, dismissive of 9-11 skeptics, reluctantly teams with grieving father Paul Cooper (the outstanding Joseph Culp) to investigate. After losing his daughter in the attacks, Cooper has transformed himself into a 9-11 expert — at the expense of his marriage. As Prokop and Cooper kick at the hornets’ nest, a sickening, carefully orchestrated pattern of deceit emerges — and Prokop realizes publishing the story may mean curtains on his career. The well-researched (and exhaustively documented on the DVD) thriller ultimately proves more compelling than documentaries such as Loose Change by taking a narrative approach and by personalizing the story. Disbelieving investigative reporter Prokop is an effective audience surrogate, playing devil’s advocate, while the passionate, self-destructive Cooper grounds the story with heart and soul — a constant reminder of the human cost of the "war on terror." The script is top-notch, the characterizations moving. If the film has a flaw, it’s in trying to document so much evidence in a narrative thriller. Yet by and large, it pulls it off to deliver a chilling and effective message — maybe it can happen here.                             JIM CIRILE  - Creative Screenwriting Magazine

 Dear Friends,
I am so very impressed and proud of A SINGLE WOMAN.
It is a fantastic anti-war film, as seen thru the life & times of Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin from Montana,
the first woman ever elected to the Unites States Congress.
Kamala Lopez,  the director/producer of ASW, has done an incredible job finishing the film, which is now vastly superior to the earlier version that we showed at our house in 2007.
Jeanmarie Simpson could easily win the Academy Award for Best Actress in her role as Jeannette Rankin. Joni Mitchell’s music in this film is absolutely magical and Martin Sheen’s narration is wonderful.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who has arranged for
A SINGLE WOMAN to be screened at the Capitol in Washington DC, says:

"Congratulations on the screening of A Single Woman. Your work will make it possible for the singularly important life of Jeannette Rankin to receive much deserved attention.   Her life becomes more relevant for this nation and the world as we continue to proceed along a path of war.  Perhaps your film will point the way to a different path, the road less traveled, the path of A Single Woman.  All of our love is with you as your work begins to emerge.  We look forward to introducing it to Washington, DC so that our nation’s Capitol can rediscover the deeper meaning of Jeannette Rankin’s life, and in doing so,
it may discover the possibility of peace."
Sincerely,
Dennis Kucinich

The Situation from Hurricane IKE in Haiti is Horrific ~ Please Consider Sending a Contribution to Partners in Health - Read Below

If each person who reads this email sends even $10, that will be thousands of dollars. Mona: monad24@charter.net Wednesday , September 10, 2008 A detailed up-to-date report by Dr. Paul Farmer of "Partners in Health" * In Haiti, as many as 1,000 people have died and an estimated one million left homeless after the impoverished country was hit by four major storms and hurricanes in less than a month. We speak to the renowned physician Dr. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, a group that provides free medical care in Haiti. After visiting Gonaives over the weekend, Dr. Farmer wrote, “After 25 years spent working in Haiti and having grown up in Florida, I can honestly say that I have never seen anything as painful as what I just witnessed." DR. PAUL FARMER: Well, the situation is perhaps most grave in Gonaives, but unfortunately, the entire country has been affected by these stormssouthern Haiti, northern Haiti and even central Haiti, where we’ve never seen flooding before. Dr. Paul Farmer: As for getting into Gonaives, I had heard, even from the air where one could see approaching Port-au-Prince, that the city was under water. I had heard that it was not possible to get there. But we just went there in a jeep. There are three main ways into Gonaives: from the north, the south and from the central area of Haiti, where we work. We also work close to Gonaives, a little bit further south on the coast in a town called St. Marc, also badly affected by the storm. But Saturday night, Sunday morning, the way that we got in, the bridge through centralfrom central Haiti also collapsed. So, although it’s more difficult than ever to get into Gonaives, I’m confident that a determined relief effort could reach all of those people stranded there, since we’re not really specialists in disaster relief and we didn’t have much trouble getting there. In fact, my colleagues there today tell me they intend to go back to Gonaives, and whether that’s by using a small boat or just getting through thepast the collapsed bridge with four-wheel drive vehicles, we’ll see. But I think that what is clear is that people can get into Gonaives with water and food and temporary shelter. Dr. Farmer’s biography Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder is a great read.
