DOCUMENTAL Screening Series at the Un-Urban Café Screening Room
Hi Friends – When Gerry of Documental asked to set-up a retrospective of my work, I thought gosh! I’m too young, but maybe not. Come on down to visit with friends and check out the films in a very relaxed setting. The Café offers good food, especially homemade veggie soup as well as sandwiches and salads at reasonable prices.
MONDAY, October 13th. ENVIRONMENTAL FILMS - Filmmaker Sheila Laffey’s (in person) socially concerned award winning films invite activism and also entertain.
Sheila will share both docs and dramatic films she has made on her filmmaking journey from New England’s Walden Pond to Hawaiian rainforests and the oceans of the Pacific to two large Los Angeles land controversies, Ballona Wetlands and South Central Farm.
Hawaii films shot on location include two short children dramatic stories and a doc that shows sustainable projects in action and humorous PSAs. Laffey teaches Film Studies at Santa Monica College, including a new course topic: Green Screen: Films on the Environment and Transformation. She earned a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from Tufts University.

THE LAST STAND: HEROES AT BALLONA WETLANDS (2000, :56) hosted by Ed Asner with Joni Mitchell music, contains views of scientists, environmentalists, development advocates, Native Americans, elected representatives and community activists. Includes highlights from the earlier hour-long versions and updates. Films in this wetlands series have won 20 awards.
