Frank Dorrel will Host a Discussion Following the Film ~

This provocative, incendiary film was produced and directed by Clay Claiborne and narrated by Martin Sheen, after years of painstaking research using declassified, but until now undiscovered, Whitehouse tapes and National Security documents.

VIETNAM: AMERICAN HOLOCAUST exposes one of the worst cases of sustained mass slaughter in history, carefully planned and executed by presidents of both parties. Our dedicated generals and foot soldiers, knowingly or unknowingly, killed nearly 5 million people, on an almost unimaginable scale, mostly using incendiary bombs. Vietnam has never left our national consciousness, and now, in this time, it has more relevance than ever. Claiborne documents the Whitehouse fabrication of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, and further, raises the question of whether JFK was assassinated to promote the Vietnam War. Martin Sheen, who played the leading role in Apocalypse Now almost 30 years ago, has generously lent his powerful voice to this actual history of the War in Vietnam.

Capitalism in Crisis: Building the Revolutionary Alternative

Speaker: Paul D’Amato

Breakout Session I: (2 p.m.)

Socialists and Unions

From the nineteenth century fight for the eight-hour day to the sit-down strikes of the 1930s to the rank-and-file movements of the 1970s and today, unions have always been a critical front in the fight for workers’ rights, and socialists have been at the heart of the union movement. However, today the labor movement has been severely weakened by three decades of a ruling class offensive against the working class, both in the United States and internationally. Find out why working people today still need unions to bring us together to fight, and why we need socialist organization to win.

Why does capitalism go into crisis?

The economic meltdown of 2008 is easily the worst crisis to face the capitalist economic system since the Great Depression of the 1930s.  Mainstream economists always try to describe these crises as the avoidable result of bad government policies or unusually corrupt business practices.  Socialists, on the other hand, see economic crisis as an inbuilt feature of the capitalist system.  The bosses’ beloved free market lurches into chaos over and over again, each time causing millions of ordinary people to face unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and hunger.  Can the madness of the capitalist “business cycle” be explained?

The New Deal and the 1930’s

In school, we are taught that President Franklin Roosevelt responded to the Great Depression by passing a host of programs to help working people — known as the “New Deal.”  The truth is quite different: FDR’s priority was rescuing big business, and it took massive and hard-fought struggles by working people to gain the Social Security, unemployment insurance, and union rights that came out of the 1930s.  Socialists and Communists played a key role in these struggles.  What can we learn from the 1930s about how to fight for working people in a time of economic crisis?

Dear Friends,
in 15 days, from November 21-23, 2008, torture survivors, community organizers, and social justice activists from across the
Americas will converge at the gates of Fort Benning, Georgia, to start building the world that we hope for and to move U.S. foreign policy into a new direction.

Change is coming and we are going to close the School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC)!

Regional events in the lead-up to the November vigil are taking place on November 9 at the gates of the U.S. Southern Command in Florida, from November 15-16 at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, on November 20 at Drummond in Alabama and on November 20 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Join us for the lead-up events and from Nov. 21-23 at the gates of Ft. Benning!

Election Analysis

The elections results for 2008 have brought us several steps closer to investigating and closing the SOA/ WHINSEC! The legislative team has analyzed the outcome, and as a result of successful grassroots pressure, over 30 of the Hall of Shame Members of Congress (who voted in June 2007 to continue funding the SOA/ WHINSEC) are no longer in Congress! WE NEED YOUR HELP! SOA Watch will launch two key legislative action campaigns in the next few weeks. Click here to check out the SOA Watch Legislative Action Index for details on our first campaign!

Grassroots Media Outreach - Spreading the Word About the SOA Watch Vigil

The story of the School of the Americas/WHINSEC and of you and your community taking part in the campaign to close down the SOA/WHINSEC is not only newsworthy but A GREAT STORY!

Let local media outlets - newspapers, TV, community radio stations - know about your participation in the SOA Watch Vigil.

Media coverage significantly magnifies the voice of those working for the closure of the SOA/WHINSEC and a more just world. Taking a little time to do media outreach can profoundly impact the number of people in your area who know about the SOA/WHINSEC and the number of people who get involved in the work to close it down!

What You Can Do to Get the Word Out!:

·  Write a Letter to the Editor and submit to your local paper (check out a sample letter here)

·  Connect with local media with a local press release (review these tips to prepare for interviews with the media)

And:Lobby CSPAN! Submit the November Vigil as a public event that C-SPAN should cover by faxing CSPAN at 202-737-6226.

Call for English to Spanish and Spanish to English Interpreters

In our attempt to build the most inclusive experience possible for all participants, the role of English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpretation will be vital. As in past years, we need both simultaneous and consecutive interpreters for the main stage, workshops, and accompanier/liaisons for non-English speaking Latin Americans. Please click here if you are able to volunteer with the SOA Watch Translation and Interpretation Working Group

Call for Vigil Volunteers

The November Vigil is a huge operation and only made possible by the tireless work of hundreds of grassroots activists around the country who are organized in SOA Watch Working Groups.
Please contact Michael Baney at mbaney@soaw.org if you are able to help with some volunteer tasks during the vigil weekend in
Columbus. thank you!

Correction: New Head of the Colombian Army

Colombian President Uribe announced that the replacement for Army chief and SOA instructor General Montoya will be General Oscar Enrique González Peña (NOT SOA graduate General Gilberto Rocha, as we had reported on Tuesday evening following an announcement by the Colombian newspaper Espectador).

It comes as no surprise that General González Peña is as well a graduate of the School of the Americas with a history of extrajudicial executions under his command. General Peña was commander of the Fourth Brigade, based in Medellín, from December 2003 to July 2005, when units under his command reportedly committed 45 extrajudicial executions in eastern Antioquia, according to a report last year by a coalition of human rights organizations known as Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Observatory.

González Peña also commanded the 11th Brigade in Cordoba in 2002-03, when the paramilitaries were operating freely in the area and the Army apparently could do nothing about it. In 2005, he commanded the Seventh Division, with jurisdiction over the brigades with among the worst human rights records in the Army: the 11th, 17th, 4th and 14th Brigades. He attended the School of the Americas in Panama in 1980.

THE ROAD TO FALLUJAH follows the story of Mark Manning, the only westerner to live with the people of Fallujah, Iraq immediately following the November 2004 battle that destroyed their ancient and holy city.  With unique access to both sides of the conflict, the film gives a voice to the people directly involved and affected by the war and takes an in-depth and humanizing look at the issues in Iraq, breaking through the myths and misconceptions surrounding the violence and offering alternative solutions to war.

Disillusioned with the lack of unbiased information about the war in Iraq , Manning leaves his job as a diver on the offshore oil rigs of California and travels to the Middle East, where he meets and joins forces with an Iraqi woman, Rana Al-Aiouby, a humanitarian aid worker and journalist from Iraq .  Together, they travel into the heart of the Iraq war, un-embedded and without armed security, to experience and document the reality of war from the perspective of the Iraqi people.

A joint production between American and Iraqi filmmakers, THE ROAD TO FALLUJAH includes interviews with Iraqi civilians, refugees, resistance fighters, members of the American Military and Congress, media analysts, Islamic scholars, and world leaders of peace, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Arun Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, and Thich Nhat Hanh.

As one Military Commander said, "As went Fallujah, so went Iraq ."  THE ROAD TO FALLUJAH gives a detailed analysis of the circumstances that led to the siege of Fallujah, the actual events of the siege itself, and the consequences of the battle that have shaped the present situation in Iraq and beyond.  With a clear presentation of the reality on the ground in Iraq , the film provides a human perspective of U.S. policy in the Middle East , offering a new direction towards solutions to the current crisis and a guide for future foreign policy decisions.

Mark Manning is a friend to Topanga and to the Topanga Peace Alliance, and is delighted to be pre-screening his completed film with us:

“When I first got back from Fallujah I was devastated by what I had seen in
Iraq and at a loss of how to put the story together and get it out to people here in America . The people of The Topanga Peace Alliance came together after viewing a short documentary I had made and offered their assistance and support in getting a full feature documentary film made on the subject of the suffering in Iraq .  It was a long struggle and without the initial support from the people of Topanga the film might not have ever been completed. Their support and friendship was invaluable. I am honored to be able to screen this sneak preview in Topanga where the initial work began to the people who had the compassion and generosity to offer their support. I will always be grateful to the Topanga Peace Alliance and look forward to showing the film there and reconnecting with my old friends.”
