ROY ZIMMERMAN SINGS “REAL AMERICAN” SONGS

Roy Zimmerman took his satirical songs to Real America last year, driving 12,000 miles and flying 12,000 more to do 107 shows in 47 states before the election.

He brings his show “Real American” to Steinway Hall in West Los Angeles, Friday, January 23rd at 8:00 PM.

“Real American” will feature new material infused with Zimmerman’s on-the-road experiences and driven, as always, by the headlines.

He says, “In this election we heard a lot about ‘Real America’ as exemplified by Joe, whose name isn’t Joe, the Plumber, who’s not a plumber.”  In one new song, Zimmerman imagines what Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher’s hit single might sound like.

Another invokes “Rick Warren’s Invocation.”  The current economic woes are examined in “Buddy, Can You Spare a Trillion Dollars.”

Zimmerman explains the pre-election tour: “The idea was to g et out of my little Liberal cocoon of Marin County, CA, and meet some of the most Progressive people in the least Progressive places in the country.”

He played venues large and small in Red, Blue and Swing states, writing new songs on the road, and posting new videos to YouTube, often from the road itself.  “Gas was expensive and in short supply,” he says, “but Absurdity was plentiful and cheap.”

Along the way, Zimmerman played events at both Democratic and Republican national conventions, and joined forces with activist singer Holly Near for a series of “Sing Out the Vote Ohio” concerts.

Some have wondered if political satirists will have a harder time without the easy target of the Bush administration.  Zimmerman isn’t worried.  “Ann Coulter is giving fashion advice to Michelle Obama.  Irony lives!”

His songs are heard on NPR, Air America and Sirius Radio.  His YouTube videos have garnered over two million views and tens of thousands of comments, many of them coherent.

The Los Angeles Times says, “Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society’s foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer.”

Benefit Concert for Gaza

The Gaza Benefit Concert is an opportunity to raise our voices for the voiceless people of Gaza, who are suffering horrifically from Israel’s brutal attack on their neighborhoods.

Why Are We Doing This?

In only three weeks, the invasion of Gaza has claimed the lives of 1,200 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. We believe that military action and senseless killing on both sides are not the answer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Music is a powerful tool of creativity, reflection and action. Through this apolitical event, we hope to raise awareness of the conflict, raise funds for humanitarian relief, and mobilize the public to action.

Bringing together musicians, actors and civic leaders, the Gaza Benefit Concert is an opportunity to raise our voices for the voiceless people of Gaza, who are suffering horrifically from Israel’s attack on their neighborhoods. The event is organized by the MPAC Foundation and all proceeds will benefit Islamic Relief and KinderUSA, two humanitarian organizations who are already working on the ground in Gaza to provide food, medicine and other much-needed supplies to the 1.5 million residents of Gaza.

Michelle Shocked is a masterfully soulful singer-songwriter whose music is influenced by her Texas roots, her political activism, and a self-assured style. Mark Gonzales is a playwright, an HBO Def Jam Poet and performance lecturer.   Omar Offendum is a Syrian-American hip-hop artist and producer.

The concert will also feature a special performance by Zaytouna, a Dabkah group which presents a mixture of contemporary and traditional Palestinian Dabkah dance, & Dr. Nabil Azzam and the MESTO orchestra. MESTO is a 44-piece Multi-Ethnic Star Orchestra dedicated to performing music from the Middle East & around the world.

About the MPAC Foundation

Our vision is to educate fellow Americans with an accurate understanding of Islam.

Our mission is to engage in the research and development of issues related to human rights, democracy and pluralism; to educate all Americans regarding the teachings of Islam; and to serve the Muslim American community and promote the Islamic values of mercy, justice, peace, human dignity, freedom, and equality for all.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council Foundation will hold a Gaza Benefit Concert on Saturday, January 24th at USC Bovard Auditorium (map to USC Bovard Auditorium) to raise awareness of current crisis and raise money to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

Bringing together musicians, actors and civic leaders, the Gaza Benefit Concert is an opportunity to raise our voices for the voiceless people of Gaza, who are suffering horrifically from Israel’s attack on their neighborhoods. The event is organized by the MPAC Foundation and all proceeds will benefit Islamic Relief & KinderUSA, two humanitarian organizations who are working on the ground in Gaza today.

Islamic Relief and KinderUSA are locally based organizations who are already working on the ground in Gaza to provide food, medicine and other much-needed supplies to the 1.5 million residents of Gaza.

Islamic Relief, named a "Four Star Charity" by Charity Navigator (America’s largest charity evaluator), has been helping the Palestinian people since 1994, providing food aid, medical relief, small business loans, and orphan sponsorships, among other services. Since opening its Gaza City office in 1998, Islamic Relief has also established educational enhancement centers, care programs for psychologically traumatized children and a school for the deaf.

KinderUSA is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 by a group of American physicians and humanitarian relief workers. KinderUSA is an accronym for Kids in Need of Development, Education, and Relief that strives to develop creative solutions to long-standing problems believing that all children are entitled to their inherent rights of survival, health, shelter and education. KinderUSA puts into action programs to ensure these rights are not forgotten.
