Argentine torture survivor Patricia Isasa has fought for justice and transparency for 30 years.  Patricia was abducted by the military and police in her native Argentina when she was only 16 years old.  She was tortured and held for over 2 years at one of the 375 clandestine detention and torture centers set up during the dictatorship.  Unlike so many of the disappeared.  Patricia survived and was released (1979).

 

She then compiled complaints to be presented to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States, which was about to visit Argentina.  She was again abducted with another 30 men and women.  She was released after 3 days, but was one of only 4 to survive.   Due to her exhaustive research  her torturers were put in jail and are awaiting trial.  Even after receiving death threats in recent years, she has continued to work tirelessly and courageously to bring her perpetrators to justice .  After constant postponements in the trial date,  Patricia expects to finally be able to testify in her case this summer.

southern california war tax alternative fund

                invites applications for april 2009 grants

 

 

The Southern California War Tax Alternative Fund is accepting applications for its April 2009 grants. 

Deadline for receipt of applications is March 15, 2009. 

 

Grants are usually $100-$600, and are intended for groups and projects which serve human needs, human rights, peacemaking, and opposition to war. 

 

The Fund is deposits from people who refuse to pay some or all of their U.S. taxes due to opposition to war and desire to support constructive projects.  Interest earned by the Fund is distributed to groups chosen by the depositors. 

 

Apply for grants by sending the following via email to scwtr@yahoo.com  or surface mail (address below) to arrive no later than March 15, 2009:

 

1. A request for a grant from SCWTAF stating how much money is needed and how it will be used

2. Statement that the group/project will acknowledge a grant by letter or participate in a presentation ceremony (grant recipients are not required to endorse war tax refusal)

3. A brochure or one-page description of their activities

4. Contact information for two reference people

                           The So. Cal. WAR TAX ALTERNATIVE  FUND

 

The Southern California War Tax Alternative Fund (SCWTAF) is made up of money not paid as taxes by people who have refused part or all of federal income and/or telephone excise taxes in opposition to payment for war and in an attempt to redirect spending towards peace and social needs.  The Alternative Fund serves in the following ways:

 

A Holding Account for Unpaid Taxes:  The war tax refuser may recover their money from the Fund if the IRS levies wages, accounts, or property, or for any other reason.  The interest is used for grants. 

 

Distribution of Interest on the SCWTAF:  Fund depositors annually make grants to groups and programs serving peace and human needs.  This combines the refusal to support warfare and destruction with a positive statement for funding real human needs.  The Fund is held in banks serving underfunded communities. 

 

Confirmation of Sincerity:  Many Fund depositors consider it important to inform the public and/or the IRS of their desire to contribute to constructive purposes, but not to war.  For these refusers, depositing the "war tax" in the Alternative Fund demonstrates that the refusers are engaged in conscientious war tax resistance, not tax avoidance. 

 

The Fund was founded in 1979, and now holds $53,000 from 30 war tax refusers.  As of 2008, the Fund has granted over $60,000 to local and international projects and organizations.
