The world spent  $1.2 trillion on arms in 2006. "Against that backdrop, how can we explain to people of good sense and good faith that it was not possible to find $30 billion a year to enable 862 million hungry people to enjoy the most fundamental of human rights: the right to food and thus the right to life?" ~ FAO Dir.-Gen. Invitation to Join Cuba May Day Tour

Invitation to Join Cuba May Day Tour

With change in the air, the best time to visit Cuba is now.

We warmly invite you to join us in Havana for our Cuba May Day Celebration Tour during the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

The tour takes place from Saturday 25 April to Saturday 2 May 2009 — eight awe-inspiring days of fun and friendship. The mass gathering of Cubans at the Plaza de la Revolucion on May Day makes this the largest annual event after the Mecca pilgrimage. (See Cuba May Day photos at http://CubaFriendship.net)

Each year, guests from over a hundred countries also attend. The festivities include music, dance, pageantry, speeches, and appearances by world dignitaries. The elected leaders of the island are in attendance too. Nothing in life compares to the depth of emotion felt when immersed in an ocean of humanity proclaiming its hope for peace, equality, and dignity in heartfelt unison.

Here’s who should go: Those who want to be an honored international guest at the famed Havana May Day gala on this historic 50th anniversary year. Those who want to objectively assess five decades of island achievements for labor, women, people of color, youth and the elderly, and LGBTs. Those who love art, music, nature, museums, and dance. It’s also for those who want to learn from Cubans who have won key social justice victories North Americans still seek.

The tour has official recognition. It’s designed by Cubans for North Americans to experience island life as is only possible on Cuba Education Tours. It all happens from the comfort of the luxurious five-star Hotel Habana Libre.

Participants will dine with Jose Fuster, one of Cuba’s most important contemporary artists, and feast at eateries of renown, including a farewell tour dinner at the elegant Cafe del Oriente. And, they’ll hear the best Latin jazz at Club La Zorra y el Cuervo.

The Cuba May Day Celebration Tour includes a coach excursion of Modern Havana, a guided walking tour of Old Havana, the Museum of Fine Arts, the intricate scale model of Old Havana, a regal cannon firing ceremony, the stunning handmade art book publisher Ediciones Vigia, an afternoon at sunny Varadero Beach, and get-togethers with representatives of the Cuban Teachers Union, the Association of Cuban Lawyers, and the Federation of Cuban Women. Tour members will visit the Latin American School of Medicine where international students learn to become doctors for the disadvantaged in their homelands.

Tour registration closes in the coming weeks. See tour costs, registration information, a day-by-day itinerary, and US travel license details at http://CubaFriendship.net

We are here for you to assist with travel and answer any questions you may have about beautiful Cuba.

Looking forward to meeting you on the island,

Argentine torture survivor Patricia Isasa has fought for justice and transparency for 30 years.  Patricia was abducted by the military and police in her native Argentina when she was only 16 years old.  She was tortured and held for over 2 years at one of the 375 clandestine detention and torture centers set up during the dictatorship.  Unlike so many of the disappeared.  Patricia survived and was released (1979).

She then compiled complaints to be presented to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States, which was about to visit Argentina.  She was again abducted with another 30 men and women.  She was released after 3 days, but was one of only 4 to survive.   Due to her exhaustive research  her torturers were put in jail and are awaiting trial.  Even after receiving death threats in recent years, she has continued to work tirelessly and courageously to bring her perpetrators to justice .  After constant postponements in the trial date,  Patricia expects to finally be able to testify in her case this summer.
