Susan Galleymore, the mother of a U.S. soldier, made international headlines by taking the extraordinary and dangerous step of traveling to Iraq to visit her son stationed on a military base in the so-called Sunni Triangle, north of Baghdad.

What she found in Iraq challenged her to continue her journey interviewing mothers in war zones including Iraq, Israel and the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Afghanistan—as well as in the U.S. These powerful first-person stories offer dramatic insight into the impact of war on mothers, families, communities, and cultures around the world.

Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak About War and Terror gets to the heart of extreme social experiences—war and warriors, mothers and children, communities and cultures—and explores the meaning of courage, fear, and leadership.

Each stop will feature local US military mothers and/or refugee mothers, including those whose stories are told in Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak About War and Terror.

Book signing with Susan Galleymore follows each event.

  • Rossana Cambron, a member of the San Gabriel Chapter of Military Families Speak Out, whose son is an active US service member completing a tour in Iraq
  • Patty Domay, a local citizen activist who works to oppose military recruiters in her neighborhood

Also:

  • MC: Eisha Mason, Host of KPFK’s Morning Review, Assoc. Regional Director, AFSC-Pacific SW Region
  • Poetry with Vivien Sansour, a native of Palestine, poems will include: "Live From Gaza" and "A letter from an Israeli soldier to his mother"
  • Art of Iraqi children sponsored by Iraqi Children’s Art Exchange

Thursday April 30th, 7:00 PM ~ Screening of “TERRORIZING DISSENT” ~ An Exposé of Events at the 2008 Republican National Convention ~ KIWA Cultural Education Center

CineBang! and KIWA Present a Screening of

"Terrorizing Dissent"

An Exposé of Events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota

Thursday, April 30th ~ 7:00 PM
KIWA Cultural Education Center
3471 W. Eighth Street, Los Angeles 90005
Map:  <http://tinyurl.com/7edzkx>

There will also be a legal update on the RNC 8

The Glass Bead Collective, Twin Cities Indymedia, and other independent media activists have released a new film, Terrorizing Dissent, featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets. ‘Terrorizing Dissent’ shows the results of the $50 million dollars the federal government gave to local authorities for security operations: the widespread, organized suppression of dissent.

After numerous house raids, eight organizers from the RNC Welcoming Committee were arrested and charged with ‘conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism,’ the first ever use of Minnesota’s PATRIOT Act. Now, the terror charges have been dropped, but two felony conspiracy counts remain.  They’re not accused of any actual wrongdoing; rather, they’re accused of being criminals for facilitating the expression of political dissent by providing logistical support for other activists.

The prosecution of the RNC 8 is a naked attempt to criminalize aboveground legal organizing—it is pivotal to the future of organizing in the United States. If the RNC 8 are found guilty, this will serve as a precedent to prosecute, as ‘terrorists’ and otherwise, others who organize in their communities for justice, peace, and ecological sanity.

CineBang! is a screening and discussion series at the KIWA Cultural Education Center. CineBang! screens documentary, fiction, animation and short films and invites community-based organizers to discuss the films and current organizing efforts with the audience.

Letter from Edward Asner

Greetings Friends!

This is my personal invitation to join me on Sunday, May 3rd at the annual Sunset Hall
Garden Party, Celebrating Agents of Change. It is my humble honor to be recognized by
the free-thinking senior members of Sunset Hall.
I will be there, not to be honored, but to acknowledge and honor all of the senior members of
Sunset Hall. They are true Agents of Change! Since 1923, they have stood strong on issues that
include supporting worker’s rights, access to health care for all, immigration reform, civil rights,
and peace and social justice internationally.
As a nation, we cannot hope for change, unless are individually responsible to be agents of that
change! We must speak out for the dynamic changes needed in the U.S. and the world. Today’s
free-thinking senior members of Sunset Hall share in that voice for our future as a nation and for
world peace!
We will be acknowledging Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday. Ross Altman will be there with a great
tribute performance to celebrate Pete’s special day.
As a long time friend of Sunset Hall, I hope to see you there!

As US bombs rained down on Afghanistan in October 2001, interfaith voices called for "justice, not vengeance" and insisted that ‘religious communities must stop blessing war and violence’. Now, with additional US troops on their way to that war-ravaged country, it’s again time to speak out and to act. As we continue to insist on the complete withdrawal of US military forces from Iraq, we must do the same with respect to Afghanistan. We must urgently take action while preparing to carry out a long-term struggle to dismantle the war system. Let us begin to create a culture of peace, based on social and economic justice, that will bring our world at last into one Beloved Community.

This important conference will feature keynote speaker Sonali Kolhatkar of KPFK and the Afghan Women’s Mission. It will address multiple dimensions of the expanding war in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, including:

  • How and why the US became involved in Afghanistan: Geopolitics and energy
  • US military and economic policy in Afghanistan: diplomacy as an alternative to war
  • Afghani women in struggle: cultural contexts and fundamental human rights
  • Religion: A force for peace and healing, or oppression and destruction?
  • War and the economic crisis: Impacts from Kabul to LA
  • Joining hearts and hands: How we in LA can help Afghani people
  • Strategies for organizing to stop the US war/occupation of Afghanistan

We invite members of faith communities, students, peace activists, veterans and military personnel, and others to join us for a program of speakers, films, workshops, and action plans.

Escalating the occupation of Afghanistan "will bleed us of the resources needed for economic recovery, further destabilize Pakistan, open a rift with our European allies and negate our improved image in the Muslim world prompted by our withdrawal from Iraq. Escalation will not increase US security or secure a better future for the Afghan people - indeed, more troops will certainly mean more dead civilians….Up to this point, the Afghan war belonged to George W. Bush, but Obama’s escalation threatens to make it his own. There’s still time to change direction. President Obama, don’t make this your war!" –Katrina Vanden Heuvel, "Obama’s War?"
