-Endorse the May 27 Protest

President Obama will make a Southland appearance at the posh Beverly Hilton Hotel this afternoon for a $3 million Democratic National Committee fundraiser. Join anti-war and progressive organizations, including ANSWER Coalition and March Forward!, to demand an immediate end to U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan–bring all the troops home now! We will also demand a end to U.S. funding for Israel’s war on the Palestinians. Instead of raising money for wealthy politicians who support more war and occupation, tell the President to spend funds on jobs, education, health care and much-needed social services at home.

The Pentagon is still waging a full scale war on the people of Iraq. Each day, dozens of people are killed because of the occupation. President Obama and the Pentagon are escalating the war on Afghanistan by adding 21,000 more U.S. troops. Meanwhile, the U.S. government continues to fund Israel’s war on the Palestinian people, including the siege of Gaza, with billions in aid and with high-tech weaponry. More war crimes will be committed against innocent people in the Middle East and Asia; more troops will die in these criminal wars. Come out to protest U.S. wars and militarism! Occupation is a crime: Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine!

Call issued by ANSWER Coalition and March Forward!, who are joining the protest initiated by Codepink.

“This is a Fantastic Historical Musical. KB Solomon is Paul Robeson!

I Loved it in Every Way!” ~ Frank Dorrel

Written & Produced by KB Solomon & Krys Howard - www.kbsolomon.com

This stirring tribute to Paul Robeson, a real American hero, brings to light his political stand and reflects upon the heavy price he paid. The 1 hour 45 minute show features twenty-one patriotic, popular and spiritual songs.

KB Solomon brings to life the spirit, sound and music of Paul Robeson.

Here is a Review of Speak of Me As I Am by Ed Rampell

*LOS ANGELES JOURNAL*

——————————

Old Man Robeson Keeps Rolling Along

This year has been a year of progressive biopics, bringing Che Guevara, Harvey Milk and Richard Nixon back to life on the screen (lauding the first two, reviling the latter). Add to this distinguished company Speak Of Me As I Am, a leftist bio-play starring the stirring K.B. Solomon in an inspiring one-man show about Paul Robeson that is perfect for the holiday season.

The son of a slave, Robeson was a Renaissance Man, an all-star athlete at Rutgers who earned a law degree and went on to become an actor (his most famous role was as a character of the Renaissance, Othello, from whom the play’s title is taken), singer and probably most importantly, a pro-Communist black militant who stood up to "whitey," be he a Southern racist or German fascist.

The first act of Speak of Me As I Am tells much of Robeson’s story through film clips, songs performed live accompanied by a pianist and cellist and most of all by Solomon’s commanding presence. We see how Robeson went from all-American to "un-American," the star of stage, screen and concert hall’s annual salary of $100,000 reduced to $2,000 per year when he was black listed during the HUAC-McCarthy era.

Accused of being a Communist, Robeson was denied the right to perform at home, and his passport was seized by the State Department, preventing the internationally acclaimed celebrity from accepting the numerous gigs he was offered abroad. Although the play doesn’t mention it, one of Robeson’s greatest "crimes" was declaring during the Cold War that African Americans wouldn’t fight for the USA against the Soviet Union, about 20 years before another black activist, Muhammad Ali, refused to serve in Vietnam because no Viet Cong had ever called him the N-word.

Robeson died in the 1970s, and for today’s generation, the closest they’ll come to "meeting" this extraordinary man is through this show written and produced by Solomon and Krys Howard.

Solomon’s performance is a marvel not to be missed. The towering basso profundo opera singer has the icon’s stature, mannerisms and smile down, and his mellifluous voice is a delight that sometimes had the audience singing along to numbers such as "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night." Deftly cutting from the spoken to the sung word to tell Robeson’s saga, Solomon’s renditions of classics like "Porgy’s Plenty of Nothing," "The House I Live In," "Danny Boy" and but of course, Robeson’s signature tune, "Old Man River," shall have you tapping your tootsies and perhaps tearing up, as your inner self is transported heavenward. It’s almost as if this life force, which tirelessly stood up for the "little people" against injustice, has come back to life.

Indeed, this is the premise of Speak of Me As I Am.  Robeson returns from heaven (where Solomon wittily observes he can’t find J. Edgar Hoover or Joe McCarthy) to tell his story. In particular, Robeson seeks to redeem himself against charges that he was unpatriotic, insisting that he was a real American in the revolutionary tradition of 1776, fighting for truth, justice and the democratic way. The play glosses over Robeson’s relationship with the Communist Party and Soviet Union, which he was accused of being a stooge for. Indeed, during a visit to the USSR Robeson did confront the Stalinists over the imprisonment of an artist or intellectual, whom I believe was Jewish.

This incident is powerful ammunition against those who denigrate Robeson as a Stalin apologist, and could be incorporated into Act II. In this much shorter second act, which seems to be a work in progress, the modern day Robeson comments on today’s recession and the election of America’s first black president.

I called Speak of Me As I Am a one-man show, but in fact the play makes clever use of an enchained black mannequin onstage, so that at times it almost feels like a cast of two. Photos of famous radicals and infamous reactionaries, from Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglas and John Brown to Hoover, McCarthy and Harry Truman, also decorate the set and are also put to good use.

Speak of Me As I Am joins the illustrious company of Che, Milk and Frost/Nixon, as well as the play Marx in Soho by people’s historian Howard Zinn as a work of art that brings great personalities and issues vividly back to life. This is one of the greatest things art can do. By the end of Speak of Me As I Am you, too, will feel Robeson and Solomon have got the whole wide world in their hands. Don’t miss this life affirming theatrical experience, which will be performed from time to time in 2009 as Solomon and Howard seek to bring Robeson’s thrilling story to a theater near you.

Discussion with Debra Sweet, National Director of The World Can’t Wait, fresh from her arrest in front of the White House as one of 61 people representing those cleared for release but still imprisoned in Guantanamo, and just coming from a protest at UC Berkeley demanding "Torture is a War Crime - Prosecute!" and "Fire, Disbar, and Prosecute John Yoo!"  She will discuss the upcoming National Day of Resistance to U.S. Torture on May 28th called by World Can’t Wait and others (see www.worldcantwait.org).

Location: 312 W. 8th St. (between Hill and Broadway), LA, CA.

Press Conference: "We Demand the Torture Photos Be Released…Prosecute the War Criminals!"

Paul Haggis, Mark Ruffalo, John Heard, West Hollywood Councilman John Durand and Debra Sweet will be joining to speak out against torture, as a kick-off to a week of protest and visible resistance against torture and demanding that those involved be prosecuted for war crimes and crimes against humanity.  Michael Rapkin, who has successfully defended several Guantanamo detainees, will also speak.

Demonstration at Chapman University

Chapman University School of Law holds its commencement ceremonies this week.  Torture professor John Yoo is leaving Chapman to return to UC Berkeley.  Give him a fitting send-off: "War Criminals Belong in Jail!  John Yoo Deserves No Bail!"  Join the protest, demanding John Yoo be disbarred and and tried for the war crime of giving legal cover to the U.S. practice of systematic torture.

YOU Can Take A Stand That Inspires Others on May 28th!

View and Spread this Video

Imagine being one of hundreds driving to work on a freeway near you, knowing something is dangerously wrong with the Obama administration’s excuses for the torturers.  Only this day, you’re confronted–finally–with the fact that someone else cared enough to speak out!  Be that inspiration!  Find your favorite overpass (pedestrian overpasses work best), and make your protest visible.  Here’s a video tutorial from another website that shows how to make your banner visible.  Make it orange, and make the message bold: "Release the Torture Photos…Prosecute the War Criminals!"  Need graphics?  How about mugshots of the war criminals, courtesy WarCriminalsWatch.org!  Send us your ideas, and let us know your plans!

Join World Can’t Wait in protest the day Obama has been ordered by the courts to release the torture photos.  We will be in front of the Westwood Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd., just off the 405 Freeway, visible to throngs of commuters, starting at 6 p.m.  Let us know you’re coming, and why!

Please Help Dr. Patch Adams ~ He is Going to Gaza with CODEPINK ~ To Help the Children of Gaza ~ Shae Popovich, of the OOA, Is Also Going (see below)

From Dr. Patch Adams

May 19, 2009

Dear Friend,

As a "doctor/clown," I have traveled the world over to bring the healing power of laughter to children and adults in virtually every corner of the world — from Afghanistan, to Bosnia, to Haiti. Right now, there is a group of children who are really in need of healing — the children of the Gaza Strip. Please help me bring some healing and laughter — as well as playgrounds, sports equipment and medicines — to the shattered young lives of this war-torn region.

The 1.5 million people of the Gaza Strip (more than half of them children) have had their homes destroyed, their playgrounds crushed and their schools gutted in the recent Israeli attack on this small, crowded corner of the world. Their borders — both on the Israeli and Egyptian sides –are closed, making it impossible to rebuild.

For the first time ever, we’ll be part of a coordinated effort to push open the borders by land and by sea! On June 5, I will join CODEPINK: Women for Peace, the Coalition of Women for Peace (Israel) and more than 100 American and Israeli peace activists — Jews, Muslims, Christians and everything in between. We will set up an encampment on the Israeli border calling for a lifting of the siege. We will be joined by over 150 people trying to enter Gaza through Egypt and others coming by sea.

We will bring materials to build playgrounds, sports equipment, children’s medicines — and performances that will get the children to forget their dire circumstances for a little while and laugh.

But we need your help. We need your donations to sustain a presence at both borders to put pressure on the Israeli and Egyptian governments. And we need money to purchase the playground materials, sports equipment and medicines.

Please donate today. While President Obama and the Middle East leaders talk endlessly about talks, we can actually DO SOMETHING to lift the siege and flood Gaza with love and laughter.

Let’s show them that the power of laughter can’t be extinguished!
Patch Adams

Call Your Senators Today? ~ As Early as Tomorrow, the U.S. Senate will be Voting on a $92 billion Supplemental Bill for the Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan. Tell Them No!

Call Your Senators Today

Tell Them Not to Put More Money Into the Illegal & Immoral Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/302/images/UFPJ%20Logo%20(2).jpg

Our Voices Make A Difference

As early as tomorrow, the U.S. Senate will be voting on a $92 billion Supplemental bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Senators need to hear from their constituents that this war-funding bill is unacceptable!

Congressional Switchboard Number: 1-800-517-5696

Last week, the House of Representatives passed its own War Supplemental bill of $97 billion. In the lead-up to the vote, it was widely assumed that there would be no real significant opposition. But because peace groups worked together on this, 60 members of the House voted ‘No’, of which 51 constituted an antiwar voice. This opposition was widely reported and attracted attention to opposition to Obama’s Af-Pak policies.
And before voting to approve the War Supplemental, the House added conditions that:

  • Reaffirm the ban on permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq;
  • Ban permanent U.S. military bases in Afghanistan; and
  • Support President Obama’s due dates for withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq by December 31, 2011

We still have a long way to go, but with strong opposition from the grassroots we can bring an end to the two wars. So please join with peace organizations from around the country to let your Senators know that while we support funding for the safe withdrawal of troops, and for diplomacy, economic assistance, and humanitarian aid, we oppose more money for war.  Below are key talking points for your calls:

  • At a time of economic crisis and multiplying domestic needs, the 2009 War Supplemental is an appalling waste of our resources.
  • The Supplemental funds the increase of troops to Afghanistan, escalating the war rather than ending it.
  • The Supplemental places no restrictions on U.S. bombings in either Afghanistan or Pakistan, despite the disproportionate harm to civilians.
  • The Supplemental maintains a high level of U.S. troops in Iraq for the duration of FY 2009.
Voting will come soon, so please call now and forward this message to your friends and family. Call the Congressional switchboard at 1-800-517-5696 and let your Senator know that you reject another ‘blank check’ for war!

For more background, click here for the full text of the Senate bill and here for more on the House War Supplemental. You can also read a powerful letter to the editor in the New York Times that argues against the current U.S. war strategy in Afghanistan. And as always, we highly recommend you take a look at the local costs of the war in Afghanistan at the National Priorities Project.
