CHILTIC ISTAC has been in the vanguard of providing progressive cultural and political music since the early 1980’s. They have recently regrouped and are playing music that includes their original 80’s tunes and cover songs from several great Latin American/ new artists. Their music continues to be both for those who want to hear the classics and for those who want to dance Cubia, Cha Cha, and Salsa Rhythms. They played in early June of this year at the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony for the FMLN in El Salvador to a crowd of 70,000 people.

ROSS ALTMAN is a Singer-Songfighter. He sings "to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."

He sing old labor songs, antiwar songs, civil rights songs, topical/protest songs, traditional songs, love songs, Jewish songs in Yiddish and English, and original songs that carry on that tradition. Ross grew up on the folk music of Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Theodore Bikel, Josh White, Big Bill Broonzy, Bill Holliday, and later on Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton & Malvina Reynolds.

The OOA SONGSTERS are the musical wing of the Office of the Americas. Their focus is contemporary music about current events. Many of their numbers are intended to bring the audience together in song, leading to a revolution where everyone can dance. The songsters meet once a month to share food, music, and politics – in public performances they bring that party to a larger group. They love it when you sing along.

The OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of international justice and peace through broad based educational programs. Founded in 1983 in Los Angeles by Blase & Theresa Bonpane, the Office of the Americas is a recognized source of documentation and analysis of current international events with a focus on the foreign policy of the United States.

Through its public education campaign, the Office of the Americas works to reach constituencies of students, religious and human rights organizations and all others concerned about issues of international justice and peace. Our goal is to end the long-standing international culture of militarism.

WORLD FOCUS, hosted by Blase Bonpane, can be heard every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on KPFK 90.7 FM Radio. World Focus features radio interviews with key scholars, analysts and movement leaders who are generally excluded from commercial media.

KPFK and PACIFICA RADIO Need You! ~ LOCAL KPFK STATION BOARD ELECTION

Message Sent by DJ Sanchez: original-d.j.sanchez@hotmail.com - Sanchez is the Local Elections Supervisor at KPFK.

KPFK and PACIFICA RADIO Need You!

Pacifica Radio and its five stations–KPFA (Berkeley), KPFK (Los Angeles), KPFT (Houston), WBAI (New York) and WPFW (Washington, DC)—need your help this month.  2009 is a year of challenges and change at Pacifica. We are asking for your support by taking part in the LOCAL STATION BOARD ELECTION in your area.

The LSBs are elected by the Pacifica station members to oversee management of their station. Each LSB is represented on the National Board of Pacifica Foundation–a nonprofit organization with a mission of presenting community-based, commercial-free, listener-supported radio. Electing LSBs that reflect our broad listenership is not just a good thing to do—it is crucial for the future of Pacifica and KPFK.

WHAT’S AT STAKE:  Our communities are in dire straits. Thousands of young people, and older people, too, are expecting change, and looking for answers. Getting local progressive voices out to media audiences is urgent, and requires action now. Reinforcing Pacifica stations’ community ties and professional quality is a big part of meeting this need.

That’s why we are asking you to step up and help in the revival and improvement of Pacifica.

HOW YOU CAN VOTE:  All paid-up Pacifica station listener-sponsors (members) can vote in the upcoming LSB election. That is, anyone who has paid the annual dues of $25 by the deadline, July 15, 2009. You can also become a voting member (by the July 15th deadline) by volunteering at KPFK for a minimum of 3 hours, or by obtaining a waiver from the LSB. Waivers may be obtained on a person by person basis by application to and approval of the KPFK Local Station Board.

Everyone on the membership list will receive a ballot from Pacifica’s local election committee.

HOW YOU CAN RUN:  Any paid-up Pacifica station listener-sponsor can run for a seat on the LSB, by obtaining a Local Elections Packet. Complete all forms, including providing endorsement signatures from 15 verifiable station members, and an introductory candidate statement (500-word max), etc.. ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO KPFK BEFORE JULY 15TH, 2009.

For more information on the LSB election, or to download an election packet, go to:   http://www.pacifica.org    OR CALL 1 (866) PEACE-01.

For the formal explanation of the LSB, go to http://www.pacifica.org/governance/bylaws_rev.html  and scroll down to Article Seven.

Thank You!

Actor / Ex-Fundamentalist Preacher Lee Boek to Perform "Confessions of a Pulpiteer", A One-Man Show About Life at the Crossroads of Politics, Religion & Liberation

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe even leap up off your up off your seat in song as Lee Boek takes you on a jubilant and heartfelt behind-the-scenes look at his life as a fundamentalist evangelist.

Boek’s one-man show (with musicians Mitch Greenhill and Roberta Levitow), takes us on a thought-provoking, musical, feet-stompin’, up-off-your-seat hallelujahin’, poignant journey through his life as a travelin’ preacher. How does he get carried so deep into religion and why does he get out?

Situated in the ’50s and at the emergence of the civil rights movement in the early ’60s, Boek shows us a piece of Americana full of humanity and struggle that resonates with today’s major political and religious issues.
