[23 miles off the coast of Gaza, 15:30pm] - Today Israeli Occupation Forces attacked and boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, abducting 21 human rights workers from 11 countries, including Noble laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (see below for a complete list of passengers). The passengers and crew are being forcibly dragged toward Israel.

“This is an outrageous violation of international law against us. Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip,” said Cynthia McKinney, a former U.S. Congresswoman and presidential candidate. “President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that’s exactly what we tried to do. We’re asking the international community to demand our release so we can resume our journey.”

According to an International Committee of the Red Cross report released yesterday, the Palestinians living in Gaza are “trapped in despair.” Thousands of Gazans whose homes were destroyed earlier during Israel’s December/January massacre are still without shelter despite pledges of almost $4.5 billion in aid, because Israel refuses to allow cement and other building material into the Gaza Strip. The report also notes that hospitals are struggling to meet the needs of their patients due to Israel’s disruption of medical supplies.

“The aid we were carrying is a symbol of hope for the people of Gaza, hope that the sea route would open for them, and they would be able to transport their own materials to begin to reconstruct the schools, hospitals and thousands of homes destroyed during the onslaught of "Cast Lead”. Our mission is a gesture to the people of Gaza that we stand by them and that they are not alone" said fellow passenger Mairead Maguire, winner of a Noble Peace Prize for her work in Northern Ireland.

Just before being kidnapped by Israel, Huwaida Arraf, Free Gaza Movement chairperson and delegation co-coordinator on this voyage, stated that: “No one could possibly believe that our small boat constitutes any sort of threat to Israel. We carry  medical and reconstruction supplies, and children’s toys. Our passengers include a Nobel peace prize laureate and a former U.S. congressperson. Our boat was searched and received a security clearance by Cypriot Port Authorities before we departed, and at no time did we ever approach Israeli waters.”
0A
Arraf continued, “Israel’s deliberate and premeditated attack on our unarmed boat is a clear violation of international law and we demand our immediate and unconditional release.”

Sing Out For Single Payer

What would a single-payer health care system look like in the United States?  While almost every other industrialized country in the world has single-payer health care, the U.S. debates healthcare reform and the possibility of Universal Health coverage.

These ideas and more will be discussed at a concert with legendary singer-songwriter Anne Feeney on Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30pm, happening at the Musician’s Union Auditorium, , located at 817 North Vine St., just north of Melrose in the heart of Hollywood.

6 Responses to: “Obama’s Emerging Legacy: Wars, Bankers and For-Profit Healthcare” - By Glen Ford, Executive Editor of Black Agenda Report

Here are six responses I have received so far about the story I sent out on Friday titled:

"Obama’s Emerging Legacy: Wars, Bankers & For-Profit Healthcare"

By Glen Ford, Executive Editor of Black Agenda Report - www.blackagendareport.com

Thanks for spreading the EXCELLENT Glenn Ford commentary. I couldn’t agree more and for those of us who were saying all this before the fact, sad to see, we have been vindicated.

Excellent article, Frank.  Thanks for the forward.  There is another by Paul Roberts that I want to forward you on Iran.  The ease with which the reapplication of the ‘Formula’ is being applied to Iran without a serious look from even Pacifca has been surprising even to me.  History repeating itself in spades.

Dear Frank,

Thank you for forwarding the article which was critical of President Obama. This is an act of courage in a time when many people still believe the campaign, and its slogan "Hope and Change", which beat out Nike and numerous other companies to be the "Ad Campaign of the Year."

If we look at just one act of President Obama, we will see that this Hope may have been misplaced.

As Investigative Reporter Greg Palast wrote, when President Obama forced out the President of GM, and appointed a "Mini-Czar" to oversee the (forced) bankruptcy of GM (really, this is fascism, as defined by (not me) but Mussolini):

The creditors, workers and dealers of GM were screwed by the Bankruptcy Filing…however, Mr. Steven Rattner, Obama’s Investment Banker appointee to oversee the dismantlement of GM raided the Worker’s Pension Fund to make certain that Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were made whole.

Once again Frank, thank you for forwarding this article. We wanted Hope and Change…but, Hope is always in the future, and Change was never specifically defined.

The fact that the realization that President Obama serves the same Secret Government, the same Economic and Political Masters we have had since (and before) the Murder of John F. Kennedy should not be cause for despair. The fact that a great Peace Activist like Frank has recognized the Reality of who and what President Obama truly represents is cause for hope.

All the people who cursed Ralph Nader, when he was the only guy (aside from Cynthia McKinney and Dennis Kucinich) to state the truth….let’s get behind the truth tellers, rather than revile them. There IS an alternative. We are strong…rather than always going for the Evil of Two Lessers, why not get behind the Truth Tellers. We are at a Crossroads now. Even now, we can turn the tide. On all the major issues, President Obama is the same, or worse than Bush. On Wiretapping, on the Expanding War, on the "Bailouts", on NOT speaking out force lenders to lend to Main Street, on not forcing Credit Card issuers to initiate meaningful reform….

We all remember Bill Maher getting on his knees and begging Ralph Nader not to run…that was shameful. Let’s cut through the Mainstream Media Propaganda. We have lost NPR, whose chief advisor is Max Boot, Senior Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, where Henry Kissinger has an Endowed Chair. Let’s move KPFK back to where they should be…not supporting the war in Kosovo, and not remaining mostly mute on the War in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the ever-widening, fast encroaching National Security State, brought to us by Fatherland…..er, Homeland Security. Let’s shake off the anti-war torpor caused by the election of Barack Obama, and get back to who we really are….

One of the best critiques of Obama to date.  No true leftist (that would be communist or socialist, not democrat) supported or would ever support a marginal reformist like Obama.  The third world "left" cheerleaders supported him because like the Maoists of old, they advanced the naive and false position that the darker your skin color the more progressive you are.  ("The most oppressed are the most revolutionary" and other inane slogans).  Take us back to 1979 and it was "leftists" of the same reformist stripe who supported a "reformist" candidate in Iran.  His name was Ayatollah Khomeini who wiped the left off the map in Iran.  How could any self-respecting Marxist have ever supported anything associated with Islam?  How also Obama?  Great article.  Build a real left in this country.

Scott Craig - scraiglaw@gmail.com

Good to see and probably too little, too late. Also doesn’t mention Obama’s commitment to "clean coal" (an oxymoron) embedded in the new global warming initiative, which proposes "reductions" in carbon emissions that I think are about 1/4 of what all scientific estimates of what is needed to make a dent in the catastrophic climate change-ocean acidification process. Add to that Obama’s "education reform/stimulus" package being run by Arne Duncan, which is specifically designed to favor and promote "charter schools" (privatization) and "merit" pay (breaking teachers’ unions). Not to mention his normalization of indeterminate preventive detention, his cover for Bush’s use of torture, his escalation of the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, his rejection of any programs specifically addressed to overturning racial discrimination, his immigration "reform" which will doubtless include a national ID card and still stronger border enforcement, his absolute opposition to even discussing reparations for slavery and the slave trade, manifested in his boycott of the World Conference Against Racism (Durban II). It’s unimaginable that Obama would even address questions of political imprisonment in the US, as Cynthia McKinney did.One could go on and on. The main thing to underline is that this is not on Obama. It is on the so-called "left." Obama is generally speaking doing nothing other than he promised. It’s the left that has totally abandoned its morality, consciousness and responsibilities. It is way past time for a deep and thoroughgoing self-criticism and reassessment of colonialism,  elitism, class collaborationism, white supremacy, male supremacy, reformism, gradualism, neo-colonialism and other forms of identification with the empire, (most of them embedded in a slavish commitment to the Democratic Party), and the way they have gutted and destroyed any semblance of militant resistance to the powers that be or any deep-rooted organizing of the oppressed and exploited to overturn this rotten and destructive system. It is we, not Obama, who have a lot to answer for. I hope Glen’s and your readers will understand that the "near (?) total collapse of the Left" is the responsibility of the "left"

itself, not Obama.–

How do you fight "Charisma"???
WITH THE TRUTH.

"Barack Obama is the most evolved communicator that has ever run for President" goes the line in an ad that runs regularly on Progressive Radio here in Los Angeles. Translation: The "Song and Dance Routine" just got fancier.
SLICK WILLY GOT AN UPGRADE.

The moment I saw what kind of Advisors and Staff members Obama surrounded himself with…
I KNEW that this was going to be another Clinton-Style Administration.
RIGHT DOWN TO ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT at HEALTH CARE.
This is all a RE-RUN.
Clinton failed to hold the previous Administrations accountable for crimes against the Constitution.
Obama is doing the same.
Obama is fully aware of the power of his Charisma & as long as his approval numbers continue floating above 50%
Congress will continue to submit to that Charisma with their own current direction.
Obama & Congress are going out of the way to uphold the practices and dictations of the previous administration.
BILLIONS MORE in Increased WAR spending while waste and fraud by Military Contractors spins wildly out of control.
By September, Barack Obama will have more troops in the Iraq and Afghanistan "War on Terror Theater" than the Bush Administration ever had.
In a recent speech in Cairo, Egypt
Obama continued to uphold the SAME BUSH ADMINISTRATION, AL QAEDA, 9/11
Falsehood that helped justify ILLEGALLY INVADING IRAQ in the first place.
Bush-Cheney style SECRECY POLICIES CONTINUE as the Obama Administration
refuses to reveal (to the Public) the names of Coal Industry Executives who visited the White House.
AFTER promising to make his administration MORE TRANSPARENT.

Don’t get me started on the BAILOUTS!!!

Oh… By the way…
What ever happened to OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES, Mr. Constitutional Scholar???
Los Angeles is still in a "Constitution-Free Zone".
We are all still being MONITORED.

One last question.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SO-CALLED PROGRESSIVE RADIO???
Every single Progressive Radio Host was always ready bark about the Bush Administration…
Neo-Cons…
Corporatism…
Torture…
The facts behind 9/11…
and the lack of Accountability… Seemingly for ANYTHING.
The Presidency has changed hands.
Now that the Democratic Party has gained "So-Called Control",
Progressive Radio Hosts recently have just fallen into line.
(Just like the "Liberal Talk" radio hosts of the 80’s & 90’s)
Many Progressive Radio Hosts also craftily DEFLECT THE TRUTH
(As well as LEGITIMATE PROGRESSIVE CONCERNS) by blaming EVERYTHING on the Bush Administration…
Sure, these issues STARTED with the Bush Administration…
BUT LOOK WHO’s IN CHARGE NOW…
AND LOOK and LISTEN to who is NOW supporting THOSE POLICIES.
One problem with the recent Progressive Radio Talk Show Host Logic is:
WE ARE SMARTER than your average Conservative or Casual listener.
We are more informed and concerned about the directions this Country is taking.
AND…  MORE IMPORTANTLY…

WE KNOW BETTER.

I agree 8,000% with what Mr. Ford has written. I look forward to reading more.

9/11 FEMA Videographer at Ground Zero Goes Public. Exclusive Interview with Kurt Sonnenfeld.

Kurt Sonnenfeld: Exclusive Interview
9/11 FEMA Videographer at Ground Zero Goes Public

http://www.voltairenet.org/article160636.html

As official videographer for the U.S. government, Kurt Sonnenfeld was detailed to Ground Zero on September 11, 2001, where he spent one month filming 29 tapes: "What I saw at certain moments and in certain places … is very disturbing!" He never handed them over to the authorities and has been persecuted ever since. Kurt Sonnenfeld lives in exile in Argentina, where he wrote "El Perseguido" (the persecuted). His recently-published book tells the story of his unending nightmare and drives another nail into the coffin of the government’s account of the 9/11 events. Below is an exclusive interview by The Voltaire Network.

Kurt Sonnenfeld and unidentified search and rescue specialist in subterranean void beneath Ground Zero.

Introduction

Kurt Sonnenfeld graduated from the University of Colorado (USA) with studies in International Affairs and Economics, as well as in Literature and Philosophy. He worked for the United States government as official videographer and served as Director of Broadcast Operations for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s National Emergency Response Team. Additionally, Kurt Sonnenfeld was contracted by several other governmental agencies and programs for classified and “sensitive” operations at military and scientific installations throughout the United States.

On September 11, 2001, the area known as “Ground Zero” was sealed from the public eye. Sonnenfeld, however, was given unrestricted access enabling him to document for the investigation (that never took place) and provide some “sanitized” pool video to virtually every news network in the world. The tapes that reveal some of the anomalies which he discovered at Ground Zero are still in his possession.

Accused of a crime that did not occur in a manifest frame-up scenario, especially in light of ensuing events [1], Kurt Sonnenfeld has been persecuted across continents. After several years of fear, injustice and isolation, he has decided to take a public stand against the Government’s official story and is prepared to submit his material to the close scrutiny of reliable experts.

Kurt Sonnenfeld

Interview

Voltaire Network: Your autobiographical book titled "El Perseguido" (the persecuted) was recently published in Argentina where you live in exile since 2003. Tell us who is persecuting you.

Kurt Sonnenfeld: Although it is autobiographical, it is not my life story. Rather it is a history of the extraordinary events that have happened to me and my family at the hands of U.S. authorities over the course of more than seven years, spanning two hemispheres, after my tour of duty at Ground Zero and becoming an inconvenient witness.

Voltaire Network: You explained that your request for refugee status within the terms of the Geneva 1951 Convention is still being considered by the Argentinean Senate, while in 2005 you were granted political asylum, albeit, on a provisional basis. That probably makes you the first U.S. citizen in that situation! And no doubt the first U.S. Government official with direct exposure to the events surrounding September 11, 2001 who has “blown the whistle”. Is this what drove you into exile?

JPEG - 27 kb

With wife Paula, testifying before Senate

Kurt Sonnenfeld: A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave (or stay away from) his or her country for reasons of persecution. It’s undeniable that many people have been persecuted unfairly as a result of the quasi-fascist laws and policies brought about by the shock of September 11, 2001, and they deserve refugee status. But the fact is, requesting refugee status is a risky and dangerous step to take. America is the world’s only remaining “superpower”, and dissent has been effectively repressed. Any person who requests refugee status on political grounds is by nature making an extreme statement of dissent. And if your request is denied, what do you do? Once you make the request, there can be no going back.

Personally, I wasn’t forced to leave the United States, and I certainly did not “flee”. At the time I was still fairly oblivious to what was actually brewing against me. I hadn’t connected the dots yet; so that when I left in early 2003 I had every intention of returning. I came to Argentina for a short respite; to try to recuperate after all that had happened to me. I travelled here freely, with my own passport, using my own credit cards. But because of an incredible series of events, I have since been forced into exile, and I haven’t been back.

Voltaire Network: What type of events are you referring to?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: I’ve suffered false accusations for “crimes” that demonstrably did not happen, abusive imprisonment and torture as a result of those accusations, as well as outrageous calumnies against my reputation, death threats, kidnap attempts and several other violations of civil and human rights as denounced by numerous international accords. My return to the United States would not only be a continuation of those violations, but would be aggregated by the separation - perhaps permanent - from my wife and three-year old twin daughters, the only thing remaining that I have to live for. And then, after the impossibility of receiving a fair trial for a crime that did not happen, I could be subject to the death penalty.

Voltaire Network: In 2005, the U.S. Government lodged a request to have you extradited, which was turned down by a Federal Judge. Then, in 2007, the Argentinean Supreme Court – in a show of integrity and independence - turned down the U.S. appeal, but your Government persisted. Can you shed some light on the situation ?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: In 2008, the US government appealed again, this time with absolutely no legal foundation, to the Supreme Court, which will surely uphold the two already unassailable rulings made by the Federal Judge.

In one of those rulings, it was also noted that there were too many “sombras”, or shadows, surrounding my case. There were many, many obvious fabrications in the extradition order sent here by US authorities, and, thankfully, we were able prove that. The fact that there were so many fabrications has actually served to support my request for asylum. We were also able to show that we had been subject to a prolonged campaign of harassment and intimidation from US intelligence services. As a result, since my family has been assigned round-the-clock police protection. As one senator has noted about my case: “It is their behavior that belies their true motivations”.

JPEG - 33.1 kb

Sonnenfeld and his family are frequently harassed, followed, and photographed, as shown in this photo.

Voltaire Network: They want you pretty badly for a “crime that did not happen”! How do you account for such doggedness? As a FEMA official, you must have been trusted by your government. At what point did the situation capsize?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: In hindsight, I realize now that the situation had capsized some time before I actually became aware that it had capsized. Initially, the false accusation against me was completely irrational, and I was totally destroyed by it. It is incredibly difficult to have suffered the loss of someone you love to suicide, but to then be accused of it is too much to bear. The case was dismissed based on a mountain of evidence that overwhelmingly absolved me (Nancy, my wife, had left behind a suicide note and a journal of suicidal writings ; she had a family history of suicide ; etc.). The prosecution was 100% sure of my innocence before requesting the dismissal of charge.

But the sustained incarceration even AFTER it was indicated that I was to be freed was what proved to me that something was happening under the surface. I was held in jail for FOUR MONTHS after my lawyers were informed that the case was to be dismissed and was finally released in June 2002. During that time, an amazing series of strange events began to occur. While still being held, I had a telephone conversation with FEMA officials in an effort to resolve the issue, but I realized that I was considered “compromised”. I was told it had been agreed that “the agency had to be protected”, especially in light of the upheaval that was threatening with the implementation of the “Patriot Act” and the expected usurpation that would come with the new Department of Homeland Security. After all the dangers I had risked, all hardship and difficulties I had endured for them for almost 10 years, I felt betrayed. It left a void in my soul.

Because of their abandonment, I told them I didn’t have the tapes, that I gave them to “some bureaucrat” in New York, and that they would have to wait until I was released to retrieve any other documents in my possession. Soon after that conversation, my house was “seized”, the locks were changed, and men were observed by neighbors entering my house, though there is no record in the court of their entry, as would be required. When I was finally released, I discovered that my office had been ransacked, my computer was missing, and that my tape library in my basement had been dug through and several were missing. Men were constantly parked on the street near my house, my security system was “hacked” more than once, outdoor security lights were unscrewed, etc., to the point that I went to stay with some friends at their condo in the mountains, which was then ALSO broken into.

Anyone who looks for the truth recognizes that there has been an amazing series of irregularities in this case and that an appalling injustice is being carried out on me and my loved ones. This intense campaign to return me to American soil is a false pretext for other darker motives.

Voltaire Network: You have suggested that you observed things at Ground Zero that did not tally with the official account. Did you do or say anything to arouse suspicion in this respect?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: In that same telephone call I said that I would “go public”, not only with my suspicions about the events surrounding September 11, 2001, but about several contracts I had worked on in the past.

JPEG - 30.4 kb

Sonnenfeld at Ground Zero, investigating a “void” beneath fallen steel beams.

Voltaire Network: What are your suspicions based on?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: There were many things, in hindsight, that were disturbing at Ground Zero. It was odd to me that I was dispatched to go to New York even before the second plane hit the South Tower, while the media was still reporting only that a “small plane” had collided with the North Tower — far too small of a catastrophe at that point to involve FEMA . FEMA was mobilized within minutes, whereas it took ten days for it to deploy to New Orleans to respond to Hurricane Katrina, even with abundant advance warning! It was odd to me that all cameras were so fiercely prohibited within the secured perimeter of Ground Zero, that the entire area was declared a crime scene and yet the “evidence” within that crime scene was so rapidly removed and destroyed. And then it was very odd to me when I learned that FEMA and several other federal agencies had already moved into position at their command center at Pier 92 on September 10th, one day before the attacks!

JPEG - 29 kb

Rubber landing-gear tyres visible in evidence container marked “FBI Plane Parts Only.”

We are asked to believe that all four of the “indestructible” black boxes of the two jets that struck the twin towers were never found because they were completely vaporized, yet I have footage of the rubber wheels of the landing gear nearly undamaged, as well as the seats, parts of the fuselage and a jet turbine that were absolutely not vaporized. This being said, I do find it rather odd that such objects could have survived fairly intact the type of destruction that turned most of the Twin Towers into thin dust. And I definitely harbor some doubts about the authenticity of the “jet” turbine, far too small to have come from one of the Boeings!

JPEG - 36.7 kb

What happened with Building 7 is incredibly suspicious. I have video that shows how curiously small the rubble pile was, and how the buildings to either side were untouched by Building Seven when it collapsed. It had not been hit by an airplane; it had suffered only minor injuries when the Twin Towers collapsed, and there were only small fires on a couple of floors. There’s no way that building could have imploded the way it did without controlled demolition. Yet the collapse of Building 7 was hardly mentioned by the mainstream media and suspiciously ignored by the 911 Commission.

Voltaire Network: Reportedly, the underground levels of WTC7 contained sensitive and undoubtedly compromising archival material. Did you come across any of it?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: The Secret Service, the Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of Emergency Management’s “Crisis Center” occupied huge amounts of space there, spanning several floors of the building. Other federal agencies had offices there as well. After September 11, it was discovered that concealed within Building Seven was the largest clandestine domestic station of the Central Intelligence Agency outside of Washington DC, a base of operations from which to spy on diplomats of the United Nations and to conduct counterterrorism and counterintelligence missions.

There was no underground parking level at Seven World Trade Center. And there was no underground vault. Instead, the federal agencies at Building Seven stored their vehicles, documents and evidence in the building of their associates across the street. Beneath the plaza level of US Customs House (Building 6) was a large underground garage, separated off from the rest of the complex’s underground area and guarded under tight security. This was where the various government services parked their bomb-proofed cars and armored limousines, counterfeit taxi cabs and telephone company trucks used for undercover surveillance and covert operations, specialized vans and other vehicles. Also within that secured parking area was access to the sub-level vault of Building 6.

JPEG - 15.9 kb

Approaching the entrance to the sub-level areas of Building 6

When the North Tower fell, the US Customs House (Building 6) was crushed and totally incinerated. Much of the underground levels beneath it were also destroyed. But there were voids. And it was into one of those voids, recently uncovered, that I descended with a special Task Force to investigate. It was there we found the security antechamber to the vault, badly damaged. At the far end of the security office was the wide steel door to the vault, a combination code keypad in the cinderblock wall beside it. But the wall was cracked and partially crumbled, and the door was sprung partially open. So we checked inside with our flashlights. Except for several rows of empty shelves, there was nothing in the vault but dust and debris. It had been emptied. Why was it empty? And when could it have been emptied?

Voltaire Network: Is this what set alarm bells ringing for you?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: Yes, but not immediately. With so much chaos, it was difficult to think. It was only after digesting everything that the “alarm bells” went off.

Building Six was evacuated within twelve minutes after the first airplane struck the North Tower. The streets were immediately clogged with fire trucks, police cars and blocked traffic, and the vault was large enough, 15 meters by 15 meters by my estimate, to necessitate at least a big truck to carry out its contents. And after the towers fell and destroyed most of the parking level, a mission to recover the contents of the vault would have been impossible. The vault had to have been emptied before the attack.

I’ve described all of this extensively in my book, and it’s apparent that things of importance were taken out of harm’s way before the attacks. For example, the CIA didn’t seem too concerned about their losses. After the existence of their clandestine office in Building Seven was discovered, an agency spokesman told the newspapers that a special team had been dispatched to scour the rubble in search of secret documents and intelligence reports, though there were millions, if not billions of pages floating in the streets. Nevertheless, the spokesman was confident. “There shouldn’t be too much paper around,” he said.

And Customs at first claimed that everything was destroyed. That the heat was so intense that everything in the evidence safe had been baked to ash. But some months later, they announced that they had broken up a huge Colombian narco-trafficking and money-laundering ring after miraculously recovering crucial evidence from the safe, including surveillance photos and heat-sensitive cassette tapes of monitored calls. And when they moved in to their new building at 1 Penn Plaza in Manhattan, they proudly hung on the lobby wall their Commissioner’s Citation Plaque and their big round US Customs Service ensign, also miraculously recovered, in pristine condition, from their crushed and cremated former office building at the World Trade Center.

Voltaire Network: You weren’t alone on the Ground Zero assignment. Did the others notice the same anomalies? Do you know whether they have they also been harassed?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: Actually there were a few people on two different excursions that I know about. Some of us even discussed it afterwards. They know who they are and I hope that they will come forward, but I’m sure they have strong apprehensions as to what will happen to them if they do. I will leave it to them to decide, but there is strength in numbers.

Voltaire Network: With the publication of your book, you have become a "whistleblower" – yet another step on which there is no going back! There must be many people with inside knowledge about what really happened or did not happen on that fateful day. Yet, hardly any have stepped up to the plate and certainly no one who was directly involved in an official capacity. This is what makes your case so compelling. Judging from your ordeal, it is not difficult to imagine what is holding such people back.

Kurt Sonnenfeld: Actually, there are several other very smart and credible people blowing whistles, too. And they are being discredited and ignored. Some are being harassed and persecuted, as I am.

People are gripped by fear. Everybody knows that if you question US authority you will have problems in some way or another. At minimum you will be discredited and dehumanized. Most likely you’ll find yourself indicted for something completely unrelated, like tax evasion — or something even worse, as in my case. Look at what happened to Secret Service whistle-blower Abraham Bolden, for example, or to chess master Bobby Fischer after he showed his disdain for the US. There are countless other examples. In the past I asked friends and associates to speak out for me to counter all the lies being planted in the media, and all of them were terrified as to the ramifications to themselves and their families.

Voltaire Network: To what degree would your discoveries at Ground Zero expose the government’s involvement in those events? Are you familiar with the investigations that have been carried out by numerous scientists and qualified professionals which not only corroborate your own findings but, in some instances, far exceed them? Do you regard such people as "conspiracy nuts"?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: At the highest levels in Washington, DC, someone knew what was going to happen. They wanted a war so badly that they at least let it happen and most likely even helped it happen.

Sometimes it seems to me that the “nuts” are those who hold to what they’ve been told with an almost religious fervor despite all of the evidence to the contrary — the ones who won’t even consider that there was a conspiracy. There are so many anomalies to the “official” investigation that you can’t blame it on oversight or incompetence. I am familiar with the scientists and qualified professionals to whom you refer, and their findings are convincing, credible, and presented according to scientific protocol — in stark contrast to the findings of the “official” investigation. In addition, numerous intelligence agents and government officials have now come forward with their very informed opinions that the 911 Commission was a farce at best or a cover-up at worst. My experience at Ground Zero is but one more piece of the puzzle.

Voltaire Network: Those events are nearly 8 years behind us. Do you consider that uncovering the truth about 9/11 continues to be an important objective? Why?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: It is of absolute importance. And it will be equally as important in 10 years, or even 50 years if the truth still has not been exposed. It is an important objective because, at this point in history, many people are too credulous to whatever “authority” tells them and too willing to follow. People in a state of shock seek guidance. People who are afraid are manipulable. And being able to manipulate the masses results in unimaginable benefits to a lot of very rich and very powerful people. War is incredibly expensive, but the money has to go somewhere. War is very profitable for the very few. And somehow their sons always end up in Washington DC, making the decisions and writing the budgets, while the sons of the poor and the poorly-connected always end up on the enemy lines, taking their orders and fighting their battles. The enormous black-budget of the US Department of Defense represents an unlimited money machine for the military-industrial complex, figuring in the multi-trillions of dollars, and it will continue to be so until the masses wake up, recuperate their skepticism and demand accountability. Wars (and false pretexts for war) will not cease until the people realize the true motive of war and stop believing “official” explanations.

Voltaire Network: What is referred to as the 9/11 Truth Movement, has been asking for a new, independent investigation into those events. Do you think that the Obama Administration holds out some hope in this respect?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: I really hope so, but I’m skeptical. Why would the leadership of any established government willingly undertake any action that would result in a serious compromise to their authority? They will prefer to maintain the status quo and leave the things the way they are. The conductor of the train has been changed, but has the train changed its course? I doubt it. The push has to come from the public, not only domestically, but internationally, like your group is doing.

Voltaire Network: A number of human rights and activist groups are supporting your plight, not least Peace Nobel Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel. How have the Argentinean people in general responded to your situation?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: With an incredible outpouring of support. The military dictatorship is still fresh in the collective memory of most of the people here, along with the knowledge that the dictatorship (along with the other South American dictatorships at the time) was backed by the CIA, directed at the time by George Bush Senior. They remember well the torture centers, the secret prisons, the thousands of people “disappeared” for their opinions, the living in daily fear. They know that the United States today will do the same thing if they consider it beneficial, that they will invade a country to achieve their political and economic interests and then manipulate the media with fabricated “causus belli” to justify their conquests.

Kurt Sonnenfeld with Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize 1980

My family and I are honored to have Adolfo Pérez Esquiveland his advisors at Servicio de Paz y Justicia (SERPAJ) among our dearest friends. We have worked together on many causes, including the rights of refugees, the rights of women, for children without families and children with HIV/AIDS. We are also honored to have the support of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo; Madres de Plaza de Mayo, Línea Fundadora; Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS); Asamblea Permanente de Derechos Humanos (APDH); Familiares de Detenidos y Desaparecidos por Razones Políticas; Asociación de Mujeres, Migrantes y Refugiados Argentina (AMUMRA); Comisión de Derechos Humanos de la Honorable Cámara de Diputados de la Provincia de Buenos Aires; Secretaría de Derechos Humanos de la Nación; and the Programa Nacional Anti-Impunidad. On an international level, Amicus Curiae have been presented in our favor by REPRIEVE of Great Britain, along with the collaboration of NIZKOR of Spain and Belgium. In addition, my wife, Paula, and I have been received in the Congress by La Comisión de Derechos Humanos y Garantías de la Honorable Cámara de Diputados de La Nación.

Voltaire Network: As we said, deciding to write this book and to go public was a huge step. What pushed you to do it?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: To save my family. And to let the world know that things are not what they seem.

Voltaire Network: Last but not least: what will you do with your tapes?

Kurt Sonnenfeld: I am convinced that my tapes reveal many more anomalies than I am capable of recognizing given my limited qualifications. I will therefore cooperate in any way that I can with serious and reliable experts in a common endeavour to expose the truth.

Voltaire Network: Thank you very much !

“Obama’s Emerging Legacy: Wars, Bankers and For-Profit Healthcare” - By Glen Ford, Executive Editor of Black Agenda Report

Dear Friends on my ATW-NEWS Email List,

This is the first time I have sent out anything really being critical of President Obama. Some of you will agree with what Glen Ford says here. Some of you may disagree.  I wouldn’t send this to you if I didn’t agree with what he is saying . Glen Ford has been a frequent guest on KPFK’s UPRISING, hosted by Sonali Kolhatkar. In fact, she has aired his commentaries many times in recent years. I actually communicated with him some years ago as he asked for copies of ADDICTED To WAR and my DVD  "What I’ve Learned About U.S. Foreign Policy".

If you want to write a response to this article, please send it to: Fdorrel@Addictedtowar.com .. After a day or so I will send out an email with your responses on it to the list, which is now over 1,000 people living in the Los Angeles area. Most of the emails I send out are invites to anti-war and other related events happening in this area. I have tried to not send out too many stories or articles. But in this case, I decided to do so. This came to me from Cindy Sheehan, who does agree with what Glen Ford says in this article from The BLACK AGENDA REPORT.

Obama’s Emerging Legacy: Wars, Bankers and For-Profit Healthcare

Obama Sam by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

The first Black president has racked up some impressive victories. Barack Obama has quarantined single-payer healthcare advocates, crushed dissent against the war in Congress, and transferred more money to the finance capital class than at any time in planetary history. Not bad for just five months in office. “At some point in the near future Barack Obama will become inextricably associated in the public mind with Big Capital – and deservedly so.”

Obama’s Emerging Legacy: Wars, Bankers and For-Profit Healthcare

by BAR executive editor Glen Ford

“The ‘Obama Effect’ has led to the near-total collapse of the Left.”

As of this writing, the Progressives for Obama website still exists, a relic of Left delusion that should have died of embarrassment months ago. Barack Obama has, indeed, grown in the presidency – but not into the FDR-like figure of his leftish supporters’ imaginations. Nor has his presence in the Oval Office served to spur Blacks and progressives to dramatic action, creating the “push” that Left Obamites had predicted would allow their champion to act on his more “liberal” instincts. Quite the contrary. The “Obama Effect” has led to the near-total collapse of the Left– both its white and Black wings – and made the nation safe for rule by finance capital and militarists.

The military, finance capital and healthcare corporations (insurers are a branch of finance capital) are winning every important battle because, on fundamental issues, President Obama is on their side. It is he who crushed the anti-war bloc in the US. House; who silenced and marginalized single payer advocates, while fawning over health profiteers; who engineered the greatest transfer of wealth in human history to bankers, leaving them free to once again ruin themselves and the rest of us.

So let us give President Obama his due. He not only smashed the Left opposition, he humiliated them.

“The Congressional Black Caucus can claim only eight members worthy of the label, ‘progressive.’”

There is no longer an anti-war bloc in the U.S. Congress. It began to evaporate when Obama took office. The Out of Iraq Caucus has dissolved. The Progressive Congressional Caucus cannot find a mission. And the Congressional Black Caucus can claim only eight members worthy of the label, “progressive.” The list of CBC members among the 32 Democrats that voted “No” to Obama’s $106 billion Iraq and Afghanistan war request is so short, it can be taken in at a glance. Here are the few, the brave: Barbara Lee (CA), Maxine Waters (CA), Diane Watson (CA), John Lewis (GA), Donna Edwards (MD), John Conyers (MI), Keith Ellison (MN), Donald Payne (NJ), Less than seven years ago, only four members of the CBC supported George Bush’s Iraq War Powers: Harold Ford, Jr. (TN), William Jefferson (LA), Albert Wynn (MD) and Sanford Bishop (GA). In the pages of The Black Commentator I called them the “Four Eunuchs of War” and felt confident in writing: “The rest of the 36 voting members of the Congressional Black Caucus defended Black America’s political legacy, voting No. Rep. Barbara Lee (CA) led half of her CBC colleagues in support of her ‘alternative to war’ resolution, demonstrating once again that African Americans are the core of the forces of peace and justice in the U.S.”

It’s been all down hill for the CBC since 2002, a steady slide into corporatism and irrelevance. With the Black progressive “core” definitively demobilized since January 20, the Left is largely adrift. Obama has accomplished what George Bush could not: virtually silence progressive voices in Congress, so that he can stoke the fires of war on two fronts without significant challenge from the legislative branch. It is a great victory, so why not congratulate the president, and give him the elemental respect of recognizing that he is – or is trying his best to be – a Man of War?

A Murdered Dream

Kudos, again, to the president, for such adroitness in killing a dream whose time appeared to have come: single-payer healthcare. Obama made non-persons of healthcare reform’s best friends in the Democratic Party, barring them from White House-sponsored healthcare events. The president erected a big tent that included everyone except single-payer advocates who, from Obama’s perspective, are the enemy. Instead, he wheels and deals and even invents nonexistent agreements with Big Pharma, Big Hospitals, and Big Insurance, all the while vowing to slice huge chunks out of Medicare and Medicaid.

Obama apologists offer their usual excuse: the president must huddle and compromise with the profiteers, if he is to get any kind of health care passed. The single-payers are well-meaning spoilers. Obama had to muzzle them, so he could get down to business on a practical plan.

“Obama made non-persons of healthcare reform’s best friends in the Democratic Party.”

What should be clear as day to any lucid, rational observer of the last 150-plus days, is that Obama has not compromised with anybody. Certainly, he never even thought to compromise with single-payer advocates – he simply shut them out of the discussion. And he was never in a position to effectively compromise with the healthcare profiteers and their political servants, since Obama never submitted a Plan of his own, or endorsed anyone else’s. Instead, he encouraged everybody and their momma except single-payer advocates to fashion their own plans – creating a cacophony of what Rep. Conyers aptly calls “crap.” In the end, he will throw his weight behind one or another pile of healthcare crap.

Is Obama incompetent? Only if you believe he sincerely wants a healthcare plan that is as close to the ideal of health-as-a-right as possible, in which case, yes, he has been amazingly incompetent. But why disrespect our president? Give the man credit for knowing what he is doing. Assess his efforts according to the clear logic of his actions, for he has worked wonders. Obama has succeeded in shutting out of the debate proponents of an idea supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans and an even larger segment of his own party. According to a June 12-16 New York Times/CBS News poll: “…72 percent of those questioned supported a government-administered insurance plan — something like Medicare for those under 65 — that would compete for customers with private insurers…. Sixty-four percent said they thought the federal government should guarantee coverage, a figure that has stayed steady all decade.”

“In the end, Obama will throw his weight behind one or another pile of healthcare crap.”

Only 20 percent of respondents oppose a Medicare-for-all-type plan. It would require the awesome power of a still very popular president to hold back a mob that is composed of damn near everybody, but Obama is up to the task. At the end of the process – this crap storm – that he has so skillfully set in motion, Obama will settle on a legislative contraption that will not even cover all of the 45 million-plus currently uninsured. For-profit healthcare will be safe for the remainder of his term, and possibly much, much longer.

Give Obama his props. He has turned the tide against real reform at a time of generalized crisis, when the chances for creating a civilized healthcare system were most propitious. He is a wonderment!

The Bankers’ Man

Even a man of Obama’s vast talents cannot easily hide the fact that the federal government (including the Federal Reserve) has “spent, lent or committed $12.8 trillion…to stem the longest recession since the 1930s,” as reported by the Bloomberg financial news service on March 31. The vast bulk of the money has gone to finance capitalists, most of it on President Obama’s watch. It is easily the largest transfer of national treasure in planetary history, accomplished in the relative wink of an eye, mostly outside the legislative process. By comparison, the 2008 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States – that is, the value of every good and service produced by every man, woman, child and enterprise of any kind in the nation – was $14.2 trillion. By the end of March, the feds had “spent, lent or committed” a sum equal to 90 percent of last year’s total economic activity in the United States – and still counting.

The Obama administration’s façade is cracking on the macro economic issue. Despite his hollow protestations, it is now generally perceived that Obama’s team is allowing “the banks” to get away with murder, theft and mayhem. In reality, the finance capitalist class is virtually inseparable from Obama’s economic apparatus; one is an extension of the other. Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, Robert Rubin, Paul Volker and the rest of Obama’s economic Rasputins will no more “rein in” finance capitalists, than they would put shackles on themselves.

“The Obama administration’s façade is cracking on the macro economic issue.”

Once again, I must ask that you respect President Obama. Allow him to surround himself with people of like mind, men and women with whom he shares a core worldview. Do not belittle our president, by grumbling that he is being “manipulated” by “the bankers.” Accept that he is a strong leader, who knows what he wants to accomplish and is wise enough to choose a team that reflects his vision. The Obama administration serves the bankers’ interests because Obama wishes to do so.

This will be his undoing – not his expanding wars, not the healthcare fiasco – and much sooner than most think. Obama’s sham banking regulations were unveiled to great fanfare – and bombed, colossally, on the front page of the New York Times. In language that an economics columnist for the “gray lady” of corporate media seldom deploys against sitting presidents, Joe Nocera wrote: “Everywhere you look in the plan, you see the same thing: additional regulation on the margin, but nothing that amounts to a true overhaul…. Firms will have to put up a little more capital, and deal with a little more oversight, but once the financial crisis is over, it will, in all likelihood, be back to business as usual.” Nocera’s headline read, “Only a Hint of Roosevelt in Financial Overhaul.” William Greider, writing in The Nation, a bastion of “Progressives for Obama,” concluded that “most of Obama’s reforms are insubstantial gestures, not actual remedies.”

Kevin Baker’s devastating piece in the July issue of Harper’s stripped the emperor naked. Obama was not, as his progressive followers imagined, the second coming of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Rather, he is the political soul-mate of FDR’s predecessor, Herbert Hoover: "Much like Herbert Hoover, Barack Obama is a man attempting to realize a stirring new vision of his society without cutting himself free from the dogmas of the past—without accepting the inevitable conflict….“The common thread running through all of Obama’s major proposals right now, is that they are labrynthian solutions designed mainly to avoid conflict. The bank bailout, cap-and-trade on carbon emissions, health-care pools - all of these ideas are, like Hillary Clinton’s ill-fated 1993 health plan, simultaneously too complicated to draw a constituency and too threatening to Congress to shape and pass as Obama would like. They bear the seeds of their own destruction.”

Baker is too kind. He persists in assigning Obama the most progressive of motives, when the content and consistency of his actions point to a profoundly corporate frame of mind and outlook. The president “avoids conflict” with the banks because he has no basic problem with them occupying the commanding heights of power in U.S. society.

“Barack Obama will become inextricably associated in the public mind with Big Capital.”

It is better, and ultimately more respectful, to judge a politician, or any person, by the accumulated body of his work. Based on his record as candidate and president to date, it is plain that Obama sees the world as the bankers see it. He accepts their advice because he agrees with it. He shares their core ethic, and is therefore always forgiving of their “excesses.” The fate of his presidency is entwined with theirs.

At some point in the near future Barack Obama will become inextricably associated in the public mind with Big Capital – and deservedly so. No one can predict when this perceptual critical mass will be reached, but once it has occurred, it sticks.

The aftershocks of the recent meltdown and the before-shocks of the next, onrushing crisis of capitalism will bring a cascade of calamities to the doorstep of the White House. With each crisis, Obama will do what we now know comes natural to him: protect capital at all costs to society as a whole.  With their champion saddled with such baggage, it will be interesting to see when “Progressives for Obama” become extinct.

Obama’s legacy

Submitted by hamadi on Thu, 06/25/2009 - 20:52.

Most of the black people I have spoken with recently seem almost catatonic when it comes to their ability to think critically about Obama’s presidency and what it means for African people.

Acquaintances and friends I once considered intelligent and introspective now appear obtuse and shallow.  My niece who I have long admired for her insight and wisdom is unrecognizable when she adorns herself in her Obama garb.  The transformation is almost as startling and terrifying as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The above description might seem a bit dramatic, but it is uncannyingly accurate. I am still reeling from the email exchange I had with her a couple of days ago.

She is not the only one.  Other black folks I have come in contact with before and after the election  have been equally adrift and irascible when the conversation involves anything other than praise and admiration for our first black president.

I was talking to a Nation of Islam representative a few days ago, and I tried to inform him of some of Obama’s positions on issues affecting the black community.  He immediately tried to change the subject to focus on my belief in God and my willingness to forgive. I am telling you people it is frightening.  I can understand Cynthia’s reluctance to return to the battlefield, but I guess we don’t have much choice.

Dear Friends,

I have met Alex Sanchez many times. Alex is the Executive Director of Homies Unidos. He spoke at an event I hosted many years ago. I do not believe he is guilty of anything. He is a very good young man who has been doing such important work in helping young El Salvadorian’s stay out of gangs. This must be some kind of a government set up against him.

Anti-Gang Activist Accused of Gang Crimes

Alex Sanchez

Alex Sanchez is executive director of Homies Unidos, a gang-intervention nonprofit. Alex Sanchez, known nationally for his anti-gang work with Homies Unidos, is held on conspiracy and racketeering charges. He allegedly was involved with the Mara Salvatrucha gang.

A nationally known anti-gang activist was arrested Wednesday on federal racketeering and conspiracy charges stemming from his alleged involvement in one of the most violent street gangs in the United States.

Alex Sanchez, executive director of Homies Unidos, a gang-intervention nonprofit with offices in Los Angeles and El Salvador, was among two dozen alleged members or associates of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, also known as MS-13, charged in a 66-page indictment that was unsealed Wednesday.

·     Similar cases

The defendants, with monikers such as Creeper, Grinch, Pain and Tears, were involved in a variety of crimes, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion and drug trafficking, over a 15-year period, the indictment alleges. Among the alleged crimes was a plot to kill a Los Angeles Police Department detective who specialized in investigating the gang, authorities said. Gang members had gone so far as choosing a handgun with which to kill Det. Frank Flores, authorities allege, but police thwarted the plot.

Sanchez’s arrest comes as officials seek to train former gang members to work with at-risk youths. He is at least the fourth anti-gang worker to be charged with gang-related crimes in the last several years.

Identified in court papers by the gang name Rebelde, or rebel, Sanchez was allegedly a gang leader, known as a "shot caller." He is accused of conspiring with fellow gang members to kill a man in El Salvador in 2006 and other crimes.

Daniel McMullen, a top FBI official in Los Angeles, called Sanchez a gang member "who used the guise of a reformist to deceive the public and to play both sides by accepting funds from well-intentioned donors . . . while allegedly committing crimes on behalf of the gang."

Sanchez, 37, was arrested at his home in Bellflower. He broke into tears at a U.S. District Court hearing at which he was read the charges. He is expected to enter a plea next week. The board of directors of Homies Unidos issued a statement Wednesday evening expressing "full support" for Sanchez and saying that its members were "confident in Alex’s innocence."

Homies Unidos received about $1.6 million in tax-deductible donations from 2002 through 2007, according to tax returns available on Guidestar, an online database of nonprofits. Some of the money came from celebrities, according to law enforcement sources who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak about the matter. It was not immediately clear how much money came from government sources, but at least $10,000 came from Los Angeles, according to the city controller’s office.

Before his arrest, Sanchez had been winning accolades from politicians and others for years for his work with Homies Unidos. Based in an office near MacArthur Park, the organization performed tattoo removal for former gangsters who wanted a fresh start and offered life-skills courses for those leaving the gang life.

"For 10 years Homies Unidos has been a catalyst for change, working to end violence and promote peace in our communities," Sanchez wrote on the group’s website. "In fact we are living proof that prevention works and that peace is possible."

Sanchez, a former Mara Salvatrucha gang member in the early 1990s, first came to public attention during the LAPD Rampart corruption scandal a decade ago. Allegedly reformed and working at Homies Unidos, he was planning to testify on behalf of a teenager who contended that he had been falsely implicated in a killing.

But before Sanchez could do so, he was arrested by the LAPD and turned over to immigration authorities, who began deportation proceedings for the illegal immigrant who had reentered the United States after having been deported following a car-theft conviction.

Sanchez applied for political asylum, arguing that he might be killed if he was returned to El Salvador because of his former involvement with the Mara Salvatrucha and his outspoken stance against police corruption.

His case became something of a cause celebre when police critics cited it as an example of how officers in the Rampart Division tried to neutralize potentially problematic witnesses by having them deported.

Among his chief supporters at the time was then-state Sen. Tom Hayden, who accused LAPD officers of improperly targeting Sanchez for arrest. Hayden supported Sanchez’s bid for asylum, which was approved in 2002.

Hayden said Wednesday that it was too soon to assess the merit of the case against Sanchez, but that he does not believe the allegations negated his past achievements.

"He’s one of the most sensitive, knowledgeable and effective anti-violence practitioners I’ve met," Hayden said in a telephone interview. "The violence he has averted in Los Angeles and El Salvador is hard to quantify, but there’s no doubt he’s done it."

L.A. City Councilman Ed Reyes, who said he gave $5,000 in public funds to Homies Unidos for a children’s soccer program two years ago, said he was "totally shocked" by the charges.

Though prosecutors have filed racketeering charges against 18th Street and other gangs, the charges announced Wednesday mark the first time such a case has been brought against Mara Salvatrucha. According to authorities, the gang was formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s by immigrants who fled war-torn El Salvador. Officials estimate the gang has several thousand members across the United States, as well as in Mexico and Central America. Federal authorities said the gang was one of the most violent in the nation.

The case against Mara Salvatrucha is the third major gang filing by the U.S. attorney’s office in recent weeks.

Authorities filed what they called the largest gang case in the nation last month against the Barrio Hawaiian Gardens gang, which became a priority for law enforcement after a member killed an L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy in 2005.

Last week, federal authorities issued a new round of charges in a pending case against the 18th Street gang, including allegations that a local defense attorney was serving as a liaison between the gang and the Mexican Mafia.

Mike "Cubano" Garcia, 64, a former Boyle Heights gang member who runs a gang program at White Memorial Medical Center, said the charges against Sanchez erode confidence in programs such as his.

"People start wondering, ‘Man, are all these guys crooked?’ " Garcia said.

CISPES letter of solidarity with Alex Sanchez and Homies Unidos

June 25, 2009

It was with sadness and indignation that we learned of the arrest of Alex Sanchez, executive director of Homies Unidos in Los Angeles, by the FBI on June 24.  Alex is a longtime fighter for justice in the immigrant community and has worked tirelessly to support the rights of youth in the US and El Salvador.  He and Homies Unidos, the violence prevention and gang intervention organization he helped found, have been close allies of CISPES in the struggle for justice and against police violence throughout the Americas.

We are concerned that the federal indictment against Alex follows in a long line of false charges against him and appears to be part of a pattern to target him for his work to promote an alternative strategy for combating violence than that of the LAPD and Salvadoran National Civilian Police (PNC), which over the years have chosen iron-fist tactics over crime prevention programs.  While Alex and Homies Unidos have sought to promote reconciliation within their community, many politicians in El Salvador and the US have stood by a failed model of combating gang violence with indiscriminate police violence, criminalizing youth and utilizing corrupt institutions like the LAPD and PCN to attack suspected gang members and social movement leaders alike.

CISPES stands by Alex and Homies Unidos in rejecting the changes against him, and we repeat the statement of the Homies Unidos board that “an indictment is an allegation only”.  Though the media seems intent of vilifying Alex and the work he has done to rescue youth from gang violence, we stand by him and believe that he is innocent of the crimes he is being accused of.

In solidarity,

The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES)

Here is a letter about how we can help Alex.

Hello All,

I spoke with Alex’s lawyer Kerry Bensinger today.  He would like to meet with us on Saturday at his office to discuss the case and form a strategy to free Alex.  I am still awaiting a time. Please let know if you can attend.

THE FIRST STEP we must take towards helping Alex is getting him released on bail.  The bail hearing has been set for Tuesday, June 30th. In order to do this we must present a strong case in support of Alex’s character, the work he’s done, and most importantly prove that he is not a "flight risk" or "danger to his community."

-  We need signed letters of support.  These letters should focus on Alex’s character, accomplishments and importance to his community. Mr. Bensinger, suggested and I agree, that we refrain from bringing up the apparently organized effort to derail Homies and the broken system that has allowed for the epidemic of gangs.  Keep the letters focused on the intent of getting Alex out on bail. You should know that any letter you present to the court will become public record.

-  Please also contact anyone you might think to be a good candidate for support and urge them to write a letter.  Public officials, community leaders, law enforcement…

-  We need assets as collateral for bail.  The court is most interested in this as they value property as insurance against flight risk. This is very important, as the alternative will probably be a large sum of money that will be difficult to raise. So if any you would like to post a valuable asset as guarantee against skipping bail, please contact me and I will get you in touch with the lawyer.

Please let me know if you’re schedule doesn’t permit you the time to pen a letter and we will happily provide you with a sample letter to attach your name to.

IMPORTANT: We need to have all letters of support and collateral assets by Sunday evening in order to present them to the court before Alex’s bail hearing.

You can either hand deliver them to one of the Homies staff or board members or messenger them to Kerry Bensinger’s law firm:
