CHILTIC ISTAC has been in the vanguard of providing progressive cultural and political music since the early 1980’s. They have recently regrouped and are playing music that includes their original 80’s tunes and cover songs from several great Latin American/ new artists. Their music continues to be both for those who want to hear the classics and for those who want to dance Cubia, Cha Cha, and Salsa Rhythms. They played in early June of this year at the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony for the FMLN in El Salvador to a crowd of 70,000 people.
ROSS ALTMAN is a Singer-Songfighter. He sings "to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."
He sing old labor songs, antiwar songs, civil rights songs, topical/protest songs, traditional songs, love songs, Jewish songs in Yiddish and English, and original songs that carry on that tradition. Ross grew up on the folk music of Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Theodore Bikel, Josh White, Big Bill Broonzy, Bill Holliday and later on Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton & Malvina Reynolds.
THE OOA SONGSTERS are the musical wing of the Office of the Americas. Their focus is contemporary music about current events. Many of their numbers are intended to bring the audience together in song, leading to a revolution where everyone can dance. They meet once a month to share food, music and politics. In public performances they bring that party to a larger group. They love it when you sing along.
KB SOLOMON performed his incredible musical tribute to Paul Robeson called - "Speak Of Me As I Am" at the Dorrel’s in June, to a crowd of 150 very excited people. His next performance will be a free one, happening on Sunday, August 9th, 8:00 PM at The California Plaza: 350 S. Grand Avenue, Downtown LA.
RON KOVIC is an anti-war activist, veteran and writer who was paralyzed in the Vietnam War. He is best known as the author of the memoir Born on the Fourth of July, which was made into an Academy Award–winning movie directed by Oliver Stone, with Tom Cruise playing Kovic. Kovic received the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay on January 20, 1990, exactly 22 years to the day that he was shot and paralyzed in the Vietnam War. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (Kovic and Stone co-wrote the screenplay for Born on the Fourth of July). Bruce Springsteen wrote the song "Shut Out The Light" after reading Kovic’s memoir and then meeting him.
MIMI KENNEDY is an actress and activist. She was a charter member of Artists United to Win Without War, and a leading supporter of Dennis Kucinich’s antiwar presidential campaign in 2004. She has worked on human rights, environmental and labor issues, and studied nonviolent social action with Rev. James Lawson. Perhaps best known for her role as Dharma’s mom on TV’s "Dharma and Greg," Kennedy has appeared widely on TV, the stage, and in movies such as "Erin Brockovich" and "Pump Up The Volume". Currently she stars on screen in the political tragi-comedy "IN THE LOOP" -which opens Friday, July 24th at the Landmark Theatre in West LA. She has also appeared on Bill Maher’s "Politically Incorrect." Her mid-life memoir was titled, "Taken to the Stage: The Education of an Actress."
MARCY WINOGRAD is running for Congress to unseat Jane Harman in the 36th congressional district, a 30-mile stretch that spans West LA, beach cities, Torrance, and San Pedro. COLE MILLER is the Founder and Director of NO MORE VICTIMS: www.nomorevictims.org. NMV has brought ten war-injured Iraqi children to the United States to receive various medical treatments. NMV helps these Iraqi children and their families big time. The mainstream media does show these stories, which allows American people to see what the war in Iraq has done to the children. When the children and their parents go back to Iraq, they let their friends and family members know that many American people are against the war and have been from the beginning. Cole is truly doing great things. His very moving video - NO MORE VICTIMS – will inspire you to get involved and help a war-injured Iraqi child.
SHAE POPOVICH is the Associate Director of The OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS. In June, Shae visited Gaza with CODEPINK and other human rights activists to witness first-hand, the destruction and devastation of Israel’s recent attack and bombing, which resulted in the death of over 1,400 citizens of Gaza.
BLASE BONPANE is the Founding Director of the OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS. He is an activist and author known for his work against human rights abuses and against U.S. intervention in Central America. He was deported from Guatemala for reasons related to his work with, and on behalf of, the poor and disenfranchised people of that country. He has participated in investigative delegations to El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia and Iraq. Bonpane is the author of two books, based on his experience as a Maryknoll priest in Guatemala during the 1960s, including Guerrillas of Peace on the Air. His most recent book, Common Sense for the 21st Century is a compilation of some of his KPFK Radio commentaries. He hosts WORLD FOCUS which can be heard every Sunday on KPFK 90.7 FM Radio from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
THERESA BONPANE co-founded the OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS with her husband Blase in 1983. During her 25 years as the Executive Director of the OOA, Theresa was involved with social issues, ranging from Spanish-speaking specialist in L.A. public schools, to case worker, to secretary of the East Los Angeles Town Meeting. In addition to teaching educationally disadvantaged adults, she was a full-time volunteer for the United Farm Workers in the early 1970s, later twice department chairperson of English as a second language programs, board member of Women for Legislative Action, and manager of Blase’s political campaigns. From the late 1970s for a decade she taught English at Santa Monica College, and was active in committees that range from the Pico Neighborhood Youth and Family Center to the Free Lori Berenson Committee. She lead many peace delegations to Nicaragua during the 1980’s. In 1998 she founded the Los Angeles Peace Center Coalition, and in 2001 co-founded the Coalition for World Peace. She retired earlier this year as the Executive Director of the OOA, after 25 years of dedicated service. She will continue her work for the cause of Peace & Justice, but no longer as Executive Director of the OOA.
The OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of international justice and peace through broad based educational programs. Founded in 1983 in Los Angeles by Blase & Theresa Bonpane, the Office of the Americas is a recognized source of documentation and analysis of current international events with a focus on the foreign policy of the United States.
Through its public education campaign, the Office of the Americas works to reach constituencies of students, religious and human rights organizations and all others concerned about issues of international justice and peace. Our goal is to end the long-standing international culture of militarism.
