Our leaders and pundits insist that Afghanistan is the good war, but how can that be when we rely on war lords, support a corrupt government, cynically exploit the cause of women’s rights, and commit atrocities against civilians? Jeff Neff, chair of the Social Justice Fellowship Team, will talk on these and other reasons to end the war, with thoughts on how this can be achieved.

A View from a Grain of Sand
1:00 PM Showing

By filmmaker Meena Nanji, VIEW FROM A GRAIN OF SAND is a thought-provoking, intimate portrait of Afghan women’s history over the last 30 years. Told through the eyes of three Afghan women - a doctor, a teacher and a women’s rights activist - this documentary tells the story of how war, international interference and the rise of religious fundamentalism have stripped Afghan women of rights and freedom. Together with rarely seen archival footage, their powerful stories provide illuminating context for Afghanistan’s current situation and the ongoing battle women face to gain even basic human rights.

The filmmaker will be present to answer questions after the showing.

An Open Letter to President Obama on Korea Policy

Dear President Obama,

As you likely know, on July 27, 1953, only a cease-fire agreement was signed by the U.S. with Korea, not a peace

treaty. It is long overdue for the U.S. to sign a legally binding peace treaty with North Korea replacing the world’s longest 56-year old cease-fire. Without such assurances, the people of North Korea remain in fear that their

sovereignty could be threatened at anytime by the U.S. in conjunction with its ally, South Korea.

The "Cold War" partition of the Korean Peninsula into two regions by the U.S. in August 1945 after Japan’s

surrender in WWII was imposed against the wishes of the Peninsula’s people. The U.S., in effect, replaced the

hated 40-year Japanese occupation of Korea, an action unequivocally opposed by the vast majority of the Korean people. Ironically, Korea, unlike Japan, had not invaded or occupied any other nation. This egregious assault on

the Korean people ultimately led to what is called the Korean War in which 4-6 million Koreans were killed, mostly by incomprehensible bombing. The division and the war forcibly separated 10 million families. Most of them have never heard from one another, and by now, after 60 years, most have deceased. The division of the ancient

homogenous Korean people is one of the crimes of the Twentieth Century that remains unaddressed.

President Carter once admitted the US’s profound responsibility for the division of Korea and tried to pull the U.S.

troops out of Korea. We Koreans sincerely hope that you will follow through on President Carter’s unfinished work on the Korean Peninsula.

Given the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, Koreans feel threatened by the prospect of another war as

has happened so many times over the last 6 decades.

It is time to for the U.S. to sign a peace treaty and normalize relations. For this to happen, the U.S. troops must be removed from what is now called South Korea, and the complete denuclearization of the Peninsula, including from all its surrounding waters.

We are urging the U.S. to sign a peace treaty with North Korea. We sincerely hope that you will take this

necessary step to finally achieve peace in Korea.

Sincerely,

Hwayoung Lee

Viva Palestina Breaks Through to Gaza! ~ A Report by John Parker, Who Made the Trip to Gaza

We Made It!
Thanks for your support.

Hi Everyone,

My name is John Parker, West Coast coordinator of the International Action Center, and I am proud to have been on the Viva Palestina Convoy to bring the largest U.S. humanitarian aid convoy to Palestine in history for the primary purpose of, not only bringing aid, but bringing attention to a humanitarian crisis and increase pressure on the Israeli and U.S. governments to stop the genocidal Israeli siege of Gaza.

Following is a sort of multi-media tour I’d like to take you on to let you see what I saw and understand why this aid, which is not nearly enough compared to the need, is essential for not only providing immediate assistance, but to be a part of a bigger campaign to highlight Israeli genocide - who’s latest most horrendous example has been the war and siege of Gaza.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some with video interspersed. These videos, which last between 3 to 9 minutes each, are not professionally done (I now have a greater appreciation for pros that do this regularly) but, with the pictures they do help tell the story of my trip and hopefully illustrate the need to build solidarity for the people of Gaza. We were only allowed 24 hours in Gaza, but I think there’s enough to get that point across. So, if you’ve got a second …

"Don’t Stop, Don’t Stop"
Cynthia McKinney leading protest to get into Gaza

Well, first we arrived on July 5th at the Cairo airport as show below.  There were press conferences, meetings and much more but we’ll fast forward our story to a few days before we took off from Cairo (we left Cairo on July 15th) with an interview by Cynthia McKinney at the hotel where we were waiting (or being held captive by Egyptian authorities).

(please click on either picture to see the interview with McKinney)

Let Us Through!

When it appeared on July 13 that the Egyptian government was going to deny passage into Gaza, Viva Palestina supporters held emergency demonstrations at Egyptian consulates in New York, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago and other cities throughout the United States.

(no video here, just a picture - you can click it for practice though)

Off to Gaza!

With much political pressure brought to bear on Egyptian authorities, who enforce the Israeli blockade, we finally were allowed to set off for Gaza. This was actually the second attempt since half of the delegation with four buses had headed there four days prior. On Saturday June 11th, they were stopped by the Suez Canal at the Mubarak Peace Bridge and told to turn back. When the delegation first refused the authorities tried to board the buses but the courageous delegates used human chains and "misplacement of bus keys" to stop their buses from being taken over. Finally, the delegation did turn back to Cairo to join with the rest of us.

At 12:30 am on July 15th the Viva Palestina negotiating team, led by New York City Councilmember Charles Barron, received notice that they would be allowed to enter Gaza - so the journey began …

How Different Two Sides of a Border Can Be

Overcoming obstacles imposed by the U.S., Egyptian and Israeli regimes, New York City Councilperson and lead negotiator for Viva Palestina-USA, Charles Barron; former Congressperson Cynthia McKinney, just out of an Israeli prison for attempting to deliver aid by sea to Gaza with the Free Gaza Movement; and British MP George Galloway, who organized a caravan from Britain under the same name in March, were about to lead the Viva Palestina group across the border.

Militant, unified protest actions met and overcame every challenge. So, likewise, getting over the final hurdle through Egyptian Customs which delayed our entry into Gaza for hours so our welcoming in Gaza would be small and a press conference canceled, McKinney led an impromptu loud chanting protest to prod officials into allowing us entry into Gaza. After only three minutes of chanting they began letting us in!

(On the Egyptian side of the border:

Crossing Over to Gaza

Much Needed Aid

Our 218-person contingent of activists brought hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of wheelchairs, walkers and medical supplies to the people of Gaza.

Although it’s not much compared to the need, this aid is essential due to the ferocious attack on Gaza in December and January, on top of a two-year Israeli siege and blockade of the area. Israel sent U.S.-supplied bombs, rockets and chemical weaponry against civilians, destroying more than 47,000 homes and much more. Many thousands of Gaza Palestinians now live in tents.

However, not all of the aid was allowed to be brought to Gaza. The Egyptian government, which receives billions in U.S. aid and is pressured by the U.S. government to assist Israel, impounded 47 vehicles bought by Viva Palestina for Gaza NGO clinics. These vehicles are essential in helping to provide health care for the Gazan victims of Israeli war. This amounts to $500,000 worth of aid that is not being allowed to go to Gaza. It will take further protest and especially pressure on the U.S. government, to get those vehicles released.

(click the picture to see the delivery of aid by Councilmember Charles Barron)

Delivery of Aid to Gaza

F16s & Genocide from Above
Aid to Israel vs Aid to Gaza

That the Viva Palestina caravan came from the U.S. is especially important, as Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. government aid in the world. Israel uses U.S. weapons and missiles against the Palestinian people on a daily basis. And, for the crime of practicing democracy and holding free and fair elections whereby they voted for a government led by the Hamas Party, Israel, the U.S. and the European Union each play a part in the massacre, starvation and economic and military blockade of the people of Gaza.

(click the picture to view how U.S. tax dollars get spent supporting Israel’s war on democracy)

Crossing Over to Gaza

Victims of Israel/Victims of U.S.

Over 1400 people were killed in the 23 days of war during December to January 2009 when Israel unleashed the worst of its new U.S. weaponry. Much of the damage came from above with F16 fighter jets, but equally nightmarish weapons came in the chemical form of white phosphorous; or in the form of depleted uranium to the tune of 70 tons dumped all over Gaza. Then, there’s the DIME weaponry which uses an explosion to send tiny particles that penetrate all organs. Needless to say, there aren’t enough hospitals to meet such a demand as this war required, especially since half of the hospitals in Gaza were destroyed in Israel’s assault.

About two-thirds of those killed during the 23 days of war were children. Many of the surviving children are now orphans.

(click the picture to see a patient awaiting care to save his life, then hear the testimony of some very brave, courageous children)

Victims of U.S.-Israeli War on Gaza

Interview with the Children

(See how inspiring they are. Click this final picture and the tour is over - you don’t have to come back to this email but you do have to listen to the children’s demands to stop this war on them, on their families and on the money that our government should be spending on schools and healthcare here in the U.S., not for weapons used to kill their parents in Gaza - Don’t Stop Fighting - Don’t Stop!)

In her 2010 bid to unseat Jane Harman in the 36th congressional district, Winograd wants to put 10,000,000 Americans back to work repairing our country’s infrastructure, building rapid transit, and developing alternative energy to make America more secure. She pledges to lead the congressional Progressive Caucus to cut billions in government waste in Iraq and Afghanistan and commit taxpayer money to jobs, healthcare, and education.

The Bonedaddys: www.thebonedaddys.com  are LA’s original "Worldbeatniks" (since 1985) and one of the very first American bands to be described as Worldbeat. The Bonedaddys still take a "wide stance" stylistically, and claim influences ranging from Charles Ives to Burl Ives and much in-between, with the common musical denominator being a fun, danceable party ambience. The Bonedaddy beat has its roots in twin guitar Zulu rhythms in Fela’s horn-heavy Afro-beat, bass-drenched zouk and soca music from the Caribbean, and the drum heaven of New Orleans rock-and-roll and second line rhythm. If you like rock, funk, African, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, blues, Highlife, New Orleans, gospel, hillbilly, zydeco, and things in-between, you’ll dig these guys.

CHILTIC ISTAC has been in the vanguard of providing progressive cultural and political music since the early 1980’s. They have recently regrouped and are playing music that includes their original 80’s tunes and cover songs from several great Latin American/ new artists. Their music continues to be both for those who want to hear the classics and for those who want to dance Cubia, Cha Cha, and Salsa Rhythms. They played in early June of this year at the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony for the FMLN in El Salvador to a crowd of 70,000 people.

ROSS ALTMAN is a Singer-Songfighter. He sings "to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."

He sing old labor songs, antiwar songs, civil rights songs, topical/protest songs, traditional songs, love songs, Jewish songs in Yiddish and English, and original songs that carry on that tradition. Ross grew up on the folk music of Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Theodore Bikel, Josh White, Big Bill Broonzy, Bill Holliday and later on Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton & Malvina Reynolds.

THE OOA SONGSTERS are the musical wing of the Office of the Americas. Their focus is contemporary music about current events. Many of their numbers are intended to bring the audience together in song, leading to a revolution where everyone can dance. They meet once a month to share food, music and politics. In public performances they bring that party to a larger group. They love it when you sing along.

KB SOLOMON performed his incredible musical tribute to Paul Robeson called - "Speak Of Me As I Am" at the Dorrel’s in June, to a crowd of 150 very excited people. His next performance will be a free one, happening on Sunday, August 9th, 8:00 PM at The California Plaza: 350 S. Grand Avenue, Downtown LA.

RON KOVIC is an anti-war activist, veteran and writer who was paralyzed in the Vietnam War. He is best known as the author of the memoir Born on the Fourth of July, which was made into an Academy Award–winning movie directed by Oliver Stone, with Tom Cruise playing Kovic. Kovic received the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay on January 20, 1990, exactly 22 years to the day that he was shot and paralyzed in the Vietnam War. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (Kovic and Stone co-wrote the screenplay for Born on the Fourth of July). Bruce Springsteen wrote the song "Shut Out The Light" after reading Kovic’s memoir and then meeting him.

MIMI KENNEDY is an actress and activist. She was a charter member of Artists United to Win Without War, and a leading supporter of Dennis Kucinich’s antiwar presidential campaign in 2004. She has worked on human rights, environmental and labor issues, and studied nonviolent social action with Rev. James Lawson. Perhaps best known for her role as Dharma’s mom on TV’s "Dharma and Greg," Kennedy has appeared widely on TV, the stage, and in movies such as "Erin Brockovich" and "Pump Up The Volume". Currently she stars on screen in the political tragi-comedy "IN THE LOOP" -which opens Friday, July 24th at the Landmark Theatre in West LA.  She has also appeared on Bill Maher’s "Politically Incorrect." Her mid-life memoir was titled, "Taken to the Stage: The Education of an Actress."

MARCY WINOGRAD is running for Congress to unseat Jane Harman in the 36th congressional district, a 30-mile stretch that spans West LA, beach cities, Torrance, and San Pedro.  A long-time anti-war and human rights activist Marcy mobilized almost 40% of the vote in her primary challenge in 2006.  To learn more, donate or volunteer on Marcy’s campaign, visit: www.winograd4congress.com  and become a supporter on Facebook: Marcy Winograd for Congress.

COLE MILLER is the Founder and Director of NO MORE VICTIMS: www.nomorevictims.org. NMV has brought ten war-injured Iraqi children to the United States to receive various medical treatments. NMV helps these Iraqi children and their families big time. The mainstream media does show these stories, which allows American people to see what the war in Iraq has done to the children. When the children and their parents go back to Iraq, they let their friends and family members know that many American people are against the war and have been from the beginning. Cole is truly doing great things. His very moving video - NO MORE VICTIMS – will inspire you to get involved and help a war-injured Iraqi child.

SHAE POPOVICH is the Associate Director of The OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS. In June, Shae visited Gaza with CODEPINK and other human rights activists to witness first-hand, the destruction and devastation of Israel’s recent attack and bombing, which resulted in the death of over 1,400 citizens of Gaza.

BLASE BONPANE is the Founding Director of the OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS. He is an activist and author known for his work against human rights abuses and against U.S. intervention in Central America. He was deported from Guatemala for reasons related to his work with, and on behalf of, the poor and disenfranchised people of that country. He has participated in investigative delegations to El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia and Iraq. Bonpane is the author of two books, based on his experience as a Maryknoll priest in Guatemala during the 1960s, including Guerrillas of Peace on the Air. His most recent book, Common Sense for the 21st Century is a compilation of some of his KPFK Radio commentaries. He hosts WORLD FOCUS which can be heard every Sunday on KPFK 90.7 FM Radio from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

THERESA BONPANE co-founded the OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS with her husband Blase in 1983. During her 25 years as the Executive Director of the OOA, Theresa was involved with social issues, ranging from Spanish-speaking specialist in L.A. public schools, to case worker, to secretary of the East Los Angeles Town Meeting. In addition to teaching educationally disadvantaged adults, she was a full-time volunteer for the United Farm Workers in the early 1970s, later twice department chairperson of English as a second language programs, board member of Women for Legislative Action, and manager of Blase’s political campaigns. From the late 1970s for a decade she taught English at Santa Monica College, and was active in committees that range from the Pico Neighborhood Youth and Family Center to the Free Lori Berenson Committee. She lead many peace delegations to Nicaragua during the 1980’s. In 1998 she founded the Los Angeles Peace Center Coalition, and in 2001 co-founded the Coalition for World Peace. She retired earlier this year as the Executive Director of the OOA, after 25 years of dedicated service. She will continue her work for the cause of Peace & Justice, but no longer as Executive Director of the OOA.

The OFFICE OF THE AMERICAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of international justice and peace through broad based educational programs. Founded in 1983 in Los Angeles by Blase & Theresa Bonpane, the Office of the Americas is a recognized source of documentation and analysis of current international events with a focus on the foreign policy of the United States.

Through its public education campaign, the Office of the Americas works to reach constituencies of students, religious and human rights organizations and all others concerned about issues of international justice and peace. Our goal is to end the long-standing international culture of militarism.

IN THE LOOP

A New Anti-War Film

In the Loop

It’s opening weekend for In The Loop–a great anti-war film that has been compared to Dr. Strangelove in depicting war as madness. Pre-publicity and reviews have been sensational.

About IN THE LOOP - www.ifcfilms.com/films/in-the-loop

IN THE LOOP is a smart comedy and Sundance Film Festival hit from the acclaimed team behind the award-winning BBC TV comedy series ALAN PARTRIDGE and THE THICK OF IT. The film is drawing instant comparisons to some of the great political and absurdist comedies such as DOCTOR STRANGELOVE, WAG THE DOG, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING and MONTY PYTHON.

With razor-sharp, truly laugh-out-loud dialogue the film pokes fun at the absurdity and ineptitude of our highest leaders. With everyone looking out for number one, and the fate of the free world at stake (but apparently incidental), the hilarious ensemble cast of characters bumbles its way through Machiavellian political dealings, across continents, and toward comic resolutions that are unforeseeable.

ACCLAIM

"NOT TO BE MISSED! THE GENUINE GOODS. A great performance by James Gandolfini."

Stephen Rebello, Playboy

"FAST AND FURIOUSLY FUNNY. YOU WILL LAUGH LOUD AND OFTEN. Proves that smart and funny can exist in the same movie, even in summer."

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"SCATHINGLY FUNNY…A SMART SOPHISTICATED COMEDY."

Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"FEATURES SOME OF THE MOST CREATIVE OBSCENITIES WE’VE EVER HEARD."

Dave Itzkoff, The New York Times

"A VICIOUSLY FUNNY POLITICAL SATIRE."

Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"WE DEFY YOU NOT TO QUOTE IT AD INFINITUM."

David Fear, Time Out New York

"THE SMARTEST COMEDY THAT I’VE YET SEEN IN 2009. The language is amongst the most skillful and creative use of vulgarity that I’ve seen in a sustained storyline that also managed to be smart whilst being crude."

Harry Knowles, Ain’t It Cool News

"PROFANELY FUNNY."

David Fear, Time Out New York

"HILARIOUS. An acidly funny satire about politics and pomposity. The zing and sting of the film’s dialogue harks back to screwball comedy, but the frequent flourishes of profanity throughout suggest its own genre: screw-you-ball."

Melissa Anderson, The Village Voice

"HILARIOUS, BRILLIANTLY SCATHING SATIRE."

Ben Kenigsberg, Time Out Chicago

"SCABROUSLY FUNNY."

Dennis Harvey, SF Bay Gaurdian
